Eye Candy: Kim Kane, Lexi Belle and Other Delights

A number of people asked me through various channels what I thought about Naomi Wolf’s anti-porn screed recently published in Al Jazeera and HuffPo. In it she jumbles unverified conclusions (posed as science) with anecdotes to support her opinion that men are all messed up from porn, and that it’s the internet’s fault. The four cases she cites – such as Weiner – have nothing to do with internet porn, and she wraps it all up in pseudocience. I only hope that someday we stop seeing these mainstream presentations of extraordinary and unfounded claims about human sexuality go unchallenged simply because “it’s just porn.” We provide balance and reason on Naomi Wolf’s anti-porn hysteria here.

  1. Being a student at Concordia University, I was quite disturbed by the endorsement of Concordia Psychology department into such a reactionary anti-sex piece. I contacted Dr. Jim Pfaus, who was credited as the instigator of the ”even women get desensitized from watching porn” research. I think his reply was quite telling (he was very nice), but basically, he says he wish she’d contacted him as she misused the data and he doesn’t agree with most of the piece. So the science is *really* pseudo, as even the scientist in question doesn’t agree…
He sent me a full account on their actual research, and it clearly has nothing to do with Mrs. Wolfe’s anti-porn puritan craze. The whole article is thus a bunch of sex-shaming b.s.
