  • Conjugal visits loom large in pop culture. They are the subject of prison-related jokes: In the sitcom Arrested Development, one episode builds to a scene where a character is pushed against a conjugal trailer and sees his incarcerated father having sex with his mother. The origin story of conjugal visits in America, however, is a chapter of American racism.

  • Warning for survivors of sexual trauma and abuse: There were more than 1,000 newly recorded cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) in England between April and June, NHS data reveals. They show nine cases where girls were under 18 when first seen. FGM is illegal across the UK and it is illegal to take someone abroad for this purpose.

  • Earlier this week, One Million Moms launched a campaign against the Muppets. The focus of the Christian advocacy group’s ire is The Muppets, the “perverted” new sitcom starring the puppet troupe created by the late Jim Henson, which premiered last night on ABC. (FYI: Fusion is partly owned by ABC.)

I was followed into a party by a journalist who asked me a question about female empowerment and then quoted me entirely out of context for an outlet I didn’t agree to speak with. So I feel now, with the beauty of Instagram I should clarify my statements, if for nothing else than for posterity. In drama, if a nude scene forwards a story or is shot in a way that adds insight into characters, I’m perfectly fine with it. Sometimes explicit scenes are required and make sense for the characters/story, as they do in Westeros. If it’s gratuitous for gratuitous sake, then I will discuss with a director on how to make it more subtle. In either case, like a good Mother of Dragons, I’m always in control. #dracarys #bodiesmaybetemplesbutmindsarewhatmatter #MODforreal

  • Sexual activity with an animal is covered in UK law by Section 69 (!) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. Recent allegations that a politician might have had oral sex with a dead pig would not be covered by this offence. This is because the law stipulates that the animal involved must be a “living animal”. It also only covers penetration in “the vagina or anus” of the animal.

  • Brian Shuster, founder of virtual reality network Utherverse (parent company to Red Light Center, an online meta-verse for the role-playing community), is proposing a new wave of virtual reality porn: an immersive experience that lets users move around in a 3D space. Along with holograms, Shuster is working on Syntholograms, a scene where users can walk around the environment, step to the side and peer around without seeing a cutoff.

  • A teenage North Carolina couple has been charged with making and distributing child pornography. Their alleged crime: snapping and sending nude photos — of themselves. “Pretty much everything about this case is appalling,” Mary Anne Franks, a law professor at the University of Miami, told The Washington Post in an e-mail.

  • “In the study, published online last week in the journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, Joshua B. Grubbs of Case Western Reserve University surveyed about 2,000 adults about their pornography use, their levels of anxiety and depression, and whether they perceived their use of pornography to be an addictive behavior. His results showed that people who believed they were addicted to porn also experienced more psychological distress — depression, anxiety, anger — than those who didn’t feel as if they were addicted to porn. … Earlier this year, Grubbs published another interesting study concerning perceived porn addiction, finding that the people most likely to believe that they had lost control over how much porn they watched were more likely to hold religious or moral beliefs against having sex.”

  • True Companion claims to be developing the world’s first sex robot, which is due to launch later this year. A campaign has called for an outright ban on robots developed for sex. Leading academics in robot ethics have warned that their creation will only increase the objectification of women and children, further dehumanising those who are abused for sex.
