I recently had the pleasure and opportunity to be invited to participate as a speaker in Long Now Foundation‘s Long Conversations. I was absolutely thrilled when they paired me with EFF co-founder John Perry Barlow (whom I absolutely adore!) and Twitter’s Robin Sloan. It was my first time meeting both men in person, so it’s unique in the very least that you get to see our very first conversations together. I tried to grill Sloan about what kind of energy he’s bringing to Twitter (he’s their media guy), and maybe you’ll see a bit of my frustration in the interview as he pretty much doesn’t tell me anything I want to know. Side note: while Sloan is a really nice and cool guy, and we talked about some unexpectedly interesting things, I walked away from that conversation irritated that someone like he could be in such a dynamic and exciting position, yet offer up no hint at any fire or conflict that might drive someone to be passionate in his position. Mmmf. John Perry Barlow, on the other hand — what an amazingly fired-up guy. I could really talk to him for hours. I was moved to buy him a present, which I need to send off…

Anyway, I saw that both talks went up on Fora.tv recently, and I’m getting some great feedback on them. The Sloan talk is above and Barlow is below — neatly, Fora broke the talks into six chapters of interestingness, and a couple are making their way around the Internet solo, such as the six minute segment where I tell Sloan about how I think online media has disrupted porn and the female sexual image, and overall sexual fantasy for us as a culture. John’s comments on the religious attacks on internet sexuality and the future of monotheism on the internet are not to be missed. You will like.
