TLC’s “Strange Sex” Series Starts This Weekend

This goes on the growing list of things I want to see: on this Sunday July 18, TLC (cable channel here in the US) begins airing its six-part series called “Strange Sex.” Naturally I wonder what’s ended up in this category with slight trepidation that certain sexual activities falling outside the norm might get stigmatized. And of course there’s a segment on “sex addiction” which looks to be pretty-one sided on the topic (see this article in Psychology Today for why I feel this way). But that’s TV for you no matter what, and the series looks really interesting. I want to see it! Especially with all the cool scientific devices they’re using to study and determine orgasm in the above trailer. I’ll have to ask someone to record it for me; I have a feeling it’s the kind of thing I’ll want to watch and then watch certain episodes again for a night of sex ed nerds and salacious cocktails.

Thanks to my contact at TLC for the heads-up. Here’s a snip from the PR:

From a war veteran who only experiences pain during intercourse to a former Broadway star and sex educator who learned to “think” herself into having an orgasm, STRANGE SEX profiles mysterious conditions, unusual fetishes and the kinky science behind sexual attraction. With first hand accounts and commentary from medical professionals, each half-hour episode sends viewers on an unrestricted journey into an entirely new world of sex.

Throughout the series, STRANGE SEX highlights some of the most atypical sexual encounters, including a man who has a balloon fetish, a woman who tries to have an orgasm during childbirth for the second time, and a couple who welcomes another man into their relationship, sex life, and home. VB note: if anyone ever cut me loose making a “Strange Sex” series, you know it would be made of crazy-amazing awesome. I would like to do this, I think.
