This edition of Kink Your Kindle features some absolute showstoppers in the world of new erotic fiction — and the fiction genre, period. I’m not sure what changed in the past few months, but something certainly has in the world of erotica. The newest crop of hot, lit smut is deep, and I highly recommend each and every one of them. Best of all, most of these are indies, and self-published works, so we’re supporting the writers directly! YAY!

With the exception of any nonfiction titles, every selection in this post contains explicit sex, ranging from romantic trysts with hardcore sex to character-driven, thoughtful – but very nasty – porn. Expect unusual and rich stories, characters with complexity, riveting realistic sex, and skilled storytelling.

Searching for erotic Kindle books is a nightmare of poorly written (auto generated? plagiarized?) free books, most exploiting dated (and often offensive) stereotypes that are a turn-off. But they all rank high on Amazon’s search, page after page – making it impossible to find quality erotic titles. I hope that Kink Your Kindle helps to hack a path through the rip-offs and Kindle spammers, and that through this you discover new authors you grow to love.

My new book Bisexual Husbands became available for purchase on Amazon and direct from me, on Digita Publications one week ago.

There are many vivid, well-crafted sex scenes, spanking scenes, threesomes, orgies, and more. The private detective in the story who trails the main character is right out of a Chandler book.

Magic & Desire ($9.99) by Janine Ashbless, Portia de Costa and Olivia Knight
This exquisitely crafted three-story book is quite fantastic (and I don’t usually go for fantasy fiction). “Met by Moonlight” asks the questions Can it be possible that a handsome stranger met by moonlight is a mischievous fairy out to sample a taste of human love and passion? In “The House of Dust” the king is dead, but the queen cannot grieve until she’s had vengeance. She must descend into and brave the Underworld in order to bring her lover back from the dead. Lastly, “The Dragon Lord” takes place in the misty marshlands of Navarone, where the princess is about to be married. Her parents desperately hope this will cure her of the problem that they have fought to keep secret for years—her tendency to play with fire.

New stuff from me, which I haven’t really mentioned as much as I should have this year, yet where I’ve gotten to work with and feature incredible sex writers – they blend fine lit and hardcore sex like one one else:

Packing Heat: Femdom Strap-on Stories ($3.69) edited by N.T. Morley
This anthology includes strap-on anal sex, Female Domination, male submission, cross-dressing, oral sex, erotic denial and other forms of bondage, domination, submission, sadism and masochism. I’ll add that this has some rough stuff in it – and “Old Friends” by Dexter Cunningham is a personal favorite of mine. I’d love to read it for Open Source Sex, but it might be too extreme for my listeners :)

Kink Your Kindle: Hot Summer Smut

Taste It (by Sommer Marsden)
Jill and Cole are competing for the title of Best Chef – and the reviews agree with my assessment of this wonderfully romantic, yet occasionally hardcore story, where I found I loved the characters and rooted for them both to win as much as I wanted them to rip each other’s clothes off. Marsden is a masterful author, and it’s nice to see male characters that remind me of (sexy, flawed, hot) men in my life. Not boys – men.

Unreviewed, likely super hot: Alison Tyler edited a new collection and it’s out a few days early. Three Way promises to be all about threesomes, and Tyler understands the true meaning of bisexuality.

Finally, a new one from me:

One Night Only (edited by me, Violet Blue)
Here are stories I handpicked as being ridiculously hot, and meet my high, exacting standards for stories that compel, while giving me the hot sex scenes I crave in my litporn. YourTango just gave it rave reviews as a steamy summertime beach read, and picked their three favorite stories. For example,

Maid Service by Jan Darby. Picture this: It’s your third night on the job tidying rooms in a hotel and you find yourself giving “the best maid service” someone’s ever had.

Whore by D.L. King. This is by far my favorite story in the collection. It proves that a sexy red dress can make or break you.

2011 was a busy year for sex books, and possibly the biggest one yet. The big print publishers that actually *do* produce sex books been stepping up their game, and so have the indies – add to this the self-publishing revolution, something like we’ve never seen in history thanks to e-books, DIY tutorials, online vendors for self-pub digital books and Amazon’s DTP… The market was flooded with juicy sex books, all puns intended.

I usually do an end-of-year list of the sex books I loved the most, the ones I want to make sure you know about before 2012 gets underway. Though I have to admit that there were so many this year, I had to pare the list down to a manageable size so as not to overwhelm readers with dozens of choices.

Kink Your Kindle: Selected Explicit Novels

As much as I devour Jon Krakauer books and period noir, I’ll confess that I love explicit erotic novels: I know that statement reeks of “Harlequin romance” but hear me out. There is something really engrossing and arousing about sinking into a book that makes your attention compete between an interesting story, and the powerful ‘reveal’ of explicit sex that’s possible in long-form storytelling. I got hooked on this when I discovered the skillfully erotic, yet depraved, Black Lace novels. I also discovered a lot of female authors whose new work I publish in my own “best of” erotica collections.

These are real stories with great sex. Some will remind you of Anne Rice when she wrote as A. N. Roquelaure.

Anyway, I personally picked these in hopes of kinking your Kindle:

I especially liked the friendship among all the women, and the pan-sexual nature of the stories — the writing is excellent, the characters interesting, and (as usual for N. Rostova), the sex is hot, varied, and satisfying.”

I look at dozens and dozens of sex books all year; authors and publishers send them to me, and I love it. My personal library has overgrown several six-foot-tall bookcases, and books are piled tastefully all over my flat. They are all very naughty books. At the end of the year I usually do a popular “Best Books” post. This year I thought it would be more useful if I posted it before the holidays.

I’m noticing that while more people are buying and reading books than ever before, current organizational/search systems on sites like Amazon don’t quite fit the way readers now discover new books. It is actually getting more challenging to find Amazon’s top erotica (and sex nonfiction) books because free Kindle selections have muddied the search waters; meanwhile looking at “popular” doesn’t get you new releases. What’s worse is Barnes and Noble. Talk about making discovery difficult. The Color Nook is great, but finding erotica (or any category exploration) on their site is impossible: this might just kill them. Most of all, with Amazon’s new problem and Barnes’ big problem — how do you know which ones are good? Which ones are explicit, accurate, well written, and sex-positive? Will the collection of couples’ erotica excite and inspire with new fantasies while delivering the hardcore goods, and be readable and unpredictable — or will it be like Penthouse Letters on a bad, sad and moralistic day?

I am here to help. I know the landscape really well: it’s my job. And my passion. In the list below you’ll find fiction and non-fiction from this year’s releases that I really think are the cream of the crop. I also suggest browsing off this list by reputation: the authors and editors below are among the best, so if you look for work by authors they’ve worked with you’ll strike gold almost every time. Kink Your Kindle: Now For Android

With the great news that the Amazon Kindle is now cheaper and that it’s now available for Android FREE, I updated my VB List: Favorite Things widget to be a Kink Your Kindle feature. It’s a great excuse for me to showcase more sex books for the Kindle, and especially ones I think you might not know are available. I was disappointed that I couldn’t add Janine Ashbless‘ book Dark Enchantment to the widget, as she’s one of the hands-down masters of erotic writing — most especially with fantasy flavors, fetish accessories and vampiric themes. Normally I dislike erotica with these themes and find it so cheesy I can’t get away fast enough. Yet when I read her first collection Cruel Enchantment I couldn’t get enough. If you like geeky nerdy things that live in the fantasy/horror twilight *and* explicit sex that is somehow believable and unpredictable, you’ll love her collections as much as I do.

Kink Your Kindle: Best sex books of 2009!

This week’s column was such a pleasure to put together; since I’ve edited erotic anthologies for nearly ten years, I love, love, love sex books. The end-of-year posts are always a treat because I get to re-experience my encounters with various media; put the two together and you’ve got my San Francisco Chronicle article, The Best Sex Books of 2009: Erotica and sex nonfiction in print (and in pixels) that made 2009 divine. And yes — I have a vampire erotica collection on the list! Here’s a snip:

I hate to be the one to remind you, but books are not just those things you set the lube bottle on so you don’t leave rings on your nice coffee table, or your date’s lower back. Nor are books just for holding up the laptop in bed while you watch YouPorn.com. And even though they seem designed for it, these things with pages were made for a purpose other than making a neato place to rest the round vibrators when not in use, so they don’t roll away under the bed. Again.

Books are these ancient artifacts that people once used to learn and entertain themselves, via a text interface, and often, to turn themselves on. I know, it’s hard to imagine that people can actually get off from something so clunky and antiquated. You also probably think I’m huffin’ off the pipe if you saw the Literary Review’s 2009 bad sex in fiction awards, and especially if you took the winner Jonathan Littell’s “The Kindly Ones” as any indicator of what sex writing was like this year. Don’t judge all the books by one bad cover.

Seriously, if you checked out any of the super-hot erotic books that came out this year, you’d take my word and quit waiting for that poorly-shot amateur video to buffer and get your eyes on a book already. Not surprisingly, several came from local publishing powerhouse, Cleis Press (buy books direct from their Web site to support indie publishing). Some of this year’s sex titles are so outstanding, you’ll want to move the lube off the book stack, but keep that Liquid Silk handy.

10. Unleashed (Kindle Edition) by Saskia Walker.

I’ve followed UK author Walker’s work since her first published piece of erotica, and without a doubt, Walker is one of the best erotic writers, period. “Unleashed,” while only on Kindle, is a stunner of a collection, and gives readers a taste of why Walker is published by everyone — talent, Eros and magic combine on each page of her writing. Hopefully this one will get picked up and I’ll have a paper copy to toss in my suitcase for the next business trip, when I need a pickup…

9. Kinky For Christmas and Lucky 13: Thirteen Tales Of Getting Lucky by Sommer Marsden.

There’s something about the way that Marsden tells an erotic story that is absolutely unforgettable; the very explicit experiences and emotions of her complex characters, even if just glimpsed, resonate and stay with the reader for days, and sometimes weeks afterward. “Kinky for Christmas” contains two short stories only available on Kindle but require recommendation before the holidays; “Lucky 13″ is the long-awaited new collection of the author’s finest recent work, and is highly recommended for idle erotica readers and the adventurous traveler.

8. Nylon Girls: Erotic Fashion Photography by Christine Kessler and Eric Kroll.

Soon to be released, this gorgeous coffee table book has all the glamour, gloss, and jaw-dropping sexuality that Kessler’s fetish photos are known for. The most beautiful and uninhibited fetish models all over the world have spent time in front of her lens, and what they do for her camera is surprising and always arousing.
