On Wednesday, December 3, from 8-10 pm I had a book release party at Good Vibrations on Polk Street, San Francisco. It was a blast! Highlights from the evening included attendance by costumed members of the Extra Action Marching Band -- and a very surprising congratulatory visit from Nina Hartley. She came dressed down, and squeezed me tight and shook me and smooched me. Best of all, I got to talk with just about everyone who stopped in.

The attendance was great, thanks to surprise advanced press by Fleshbot, who wrote:

"We always thought that a remote control and a box of Kleenex™ were the only accessories we needed when watching porn. But if we were in the Bay Area this evening, we'd be joining Violet Blue to celebrate the publication of "The Ultimate Guide to Adult Videos" and buying ourselves a signed copy. Judging from the press it's received so far, it looks like the must-have consumer guide of the year."

And another well-timed surprise, an amazing review by Yes Portal columnist Darklady:

"In The Ultimate Guide to Adult Videos the little porn sleuth does more than simply review more than 300 videos -- she plays Virgil to those men, women, couples, and "others" that want to know more about the controversial world of adult products but haven't been sure where to go for guidance. With social, political, and religious forces trying to keep pornography marginalized by a reputation for sleaze and misogyny, works like Blue's are absolutely vital for successful efforts to protect the health and safety of individuals, the truth, the adult industry, and possibly even the Constitution." Here is what the event promised, and delivered:

Join best-selling author, editor, and notorious GV staffer Violet Blue as she celebrates the release of her exciting new guidebook The Ultimate Guide to Adult Videos. This tome compiles over 300 reviews, advice for new viewers, tips for couples and more -- and because it's such a voluminous volume, tonight we'll just relax, snack and chat about porn.

** Get your book signed, see what I look and sound like in person, find out about the weirdest, grossest, funniest and most arousing things I saw while researching the book, and just watch me smile really really a lot and make happy yummy sounds now that the book is out and the critics love it. Come to the sparkly new Good Vibes store on Polk Street on December 3 at 8pm, and ask me what porn stars are like to talk to in real life, who is the creepiest personality in porn, what happens at all those behind the scene porn parties, and how to get ignored at the Adult Video News Awards.

Check out more quotes:

Lou Paget Best-selling author, 365 Days Of Sensational Sex:

"Violet Blue's UGAV is that trusted and discreet friend who knows EVERYTHING about adult films. From The Classics to All Sex, No Plot to Educational to Alternative preferences you will want this gem of a book to guide and enhance your choices. Violet's sex positive and unbiased review of all genres in adult material will help both the novice and seasoned viewers. Not only do you get a clear-eyed review of the storyline she highlights the best "bits" with great visual icons so you can be as assured that your erotic choices are as reliable for your sexual pleasure as your favorite moves and trusted toys."

Mike Ostrowski, Correspondent, Playboy Magazine:

"The Ultimate Guide to Adult Videos" is certainly aptly-named. Violet Blue has done her usual outstanding job of collecting and disseminating information on nearly every facet of this complex subject. Yet this work is never boring, ponderous or (shudder) scholarly. Instead, it's light-hearted, incredibly educational and quite fun. This is a truly delightful, timely and yet timeless reference work that everyone--from the most casual viewer of porn to the hard-core fan, pardon the pun--should have at hand, pardon the pun again. Bravo!"

Jane at Jane'sGuide.com:

"Now along comes the book to answer any and all of your questions, courtesy of Cleis Press and the lovely and talented Violet Blue. The Ultimate Guide to Adult Videos really does cover just about everything you can think of. I started at the beginning myself, with the sections that seemed to apply like The Porn Virgin (when it comes to videos, that would be me thanks) and Porn Myths and Stereotypes. You know, after all the years of running this website, I don't have a stereotype of the "average" porn consumer any longer, but I can tell you I DID have a stereotype of what adult videos are like. I had no idea the spectrum out there before this book." [Click here to read more.]

The Library Journal (print; review by Martha Cornog; Nov 1, 2003):

"Guides to adult videos should provide intelligent background on the medium, review selected videos in different subgenres, and supply such reference book accouterments as a resources list, bibliography, and indexes. Blue…delivers on all counts -- and provides a glossary to boot-reviewing more than 300 videos ranging from classics (Deep Throat) and gay/lesbian/bisexual features to all-sex, sadomasochistic, and educational flicks. Her supporting information is outstanding: how to watch porn (alone and with a partner), how to select videos, subgenres and clichés, issues like degradation and age of consent, and safer sex in porn; the resource list and bibliography are equally good."

Razor Magazine (print; by Anka Radakovich; Dec 2003): Article "Porno for Couples." Featured in Razor's Dec '03 "XXX Gift List for Her."

Freddy and Eddy.com:

"Synopsis: Everything you need to know about watching, buying, renting, and introducing adult videos into your relationship.
Our Review: Our addiction to Violet Blue continues with this very well written guide to adult videos. Whether a seasoned porn watching couple like ourselves or a shy couple who shudder at the thought of people screwing for the camera, this step by step treatise will entertain and inform just about everyone. This book also contains over 300 reviews of adult films in just about every genre, a directors guide, and a great section on sexual fantasies and sex positions. In short, another winner for the Sex Editor and Author Violet Blue."

The Blowfishes recommend at Blowfish.com:

"What an amazing resource! This book is ideal for anyone at all interested in watching adult videos. For the timid or those simply new to the genre, the thoughtful introduction covers everything from why one would want to watch a "dirty" movie in the first place (a new sexy toy! a different sex education! get new fantasies!) to different ways to watch porn (including helpful tips on how to persuade a reluctant lover to join you) to how to get the kind of porn you'd like (how to decipher porn titles/ box covers, what the different categories of porn mean, which awards are worth paying attention to). For the more experienced porn viewer there are tips on how to avoid what you know you don't like, an overview of porn directors and what you can expect from them, and an amazing resource section in the back which includes safer sex charts, a "Porn Terminology and Sex Act Glossary", an extensive list of places you can buy and/or rent your porn, a list of references and two indexes of movies -- one by film title and one by director. But the most impressive part of the book is the meaty middle section where many favorite porn movies are listed and reviewed, complete with categories and nifty little symbols so you can tell at a glance if a movie happens to have, say, natural tits or an "unsightly boob job" (the symbol for that one just cracks us up) or intense chemistry or dominant women, etc. There's even a symbol for movies that the author thinks would be good for newbies. We truly agree with the title: this is the ultimate guide to adult videos. Highly recommended."

Upcoming press (in print): Men's Health interview with me and book feature in articles for issues in Jan. '04 and Feb. '04.

Veronica Hart: "Your book kicks ass!"

Nina Hartley: "Ernest and I love your book! You really covered everything."
