sexuality, general
These fabulous and fun books cover a variety of sex topics, and if you're looking for one book that has all kinds of information, check these out. It seems like that we should all be given a book like one of these when we become adults, to help us navigate not just the world of sex and dating, but also to make our own personal pleasure roadmaps. These books are great for just that.
The Guide to Getting It On! by Paul Joannides
If you could only buy one book on sex, this would be my top recommendation. Joannides' painstakingly researched, frequently updated 400+ page tome is a veritable must-have for any sex library. Pretty much everything is covered here, and while the book is hetero-focused, it's highly inclusive of all kinds of sexual practices and very warm toward all sexual orientaitons -- meaning you'll get the whole picture on any given sex act, and more info, tips, techniques and advice than anywhere else. Plus, the illustrations are damn sexy and the tone is fun; you'll giggle while you learn.
Down and Dirty Sex Secrets by Tristan Taormino
This is another terrific general sex book, written by the young, hip and whip-smart author of The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women. It covers a huge spectrum of informaiton and is very kink, porn and anal positive; unlike all other genreal sex book authors on the market Tristan is an out lesbian who also sleeps with men, so it's refreshing to get info on sex and sexual techniques from her POV.
The Multi-Orgasmic Couple Chia + Abrams
A caveat before reading this bestseller: it's written from the perspective of Tantric sex and "sacred sexuality", so many might find the tone a little New Agey, which isn't to play down the excellent information to be found here. Multiple orgasms for couples and acheiving them together is the focus and the authors give clear instructions on breathing techniques, sexual positions and much more. Also in French and Portuguese.
Exhibitionism for the Shy by Carol Queen
This is absolutely one of my favorite all-time books for inspiring confidence in trying out any new sex-related anything; it gave me the courage to pick up my first whip and helped me plan my first foray into role-play and sexual dominant play. But Carol teaches everything from how to talk dirty (or do anything sexual) when you're nervous and how to plan a seduction.
The Little Bit Naughty Book of Sex Positions Kelly
Need ideas? This is the best sex position book I've ever seen; no position is impossible and the sexy color photos are extremely inspiring, indeed. This is also a great way to get ideas for positions that might help him last longer, or give her the stimulation she needs to get "over the edge": these things are individual, so experiment with a good guide.
The Survivor's Guide to Sex Haines
This, I think, is one of the most amazing sex books ever written. Why? because it's the first (and best) book for sexual survivors -- those who have survived sexual abuse and sexual trauma, and those dealing with sexual issues as a result, and it tells you how to get your sex life back. It's the first sex-positive, all-orientations book on surviving and is full of real-life techniques for reclaiming and enjoying sex again (and what to do when these techniques don't work). Also great for people struggling with intense sexual shame.
Victims No Longer Lew
Written especially for men who have survived childhood sexual abuse and sexual trauma, this thoughtful book approaches healing and enjoying adult sex from a sex-positive perspective, putting control over emotions and physical reactions back in the hands of the survivor and empowering the reader to have a healthy and hot sex life.
The Ultimate Guide to Sex and Disability Silverberg + Odette
They say those of us who are in fully-functioning bodies are in a temporary situaiton; and repetitive stress injuries aside, having limited mobility (from the minor to the major) is no fun when you want to get off. This revolutionary book explains and gives practical techniques on not only having sex but enjoying the hell out of it too when contending with physical obstacles ranging from MS and spinal cord injuries to limited range from body size and a huge variety of disabilities. And thank fuck a book finally came along recognizing the fact that people with disabilities are excited, horny, sexual beings and *even more* sexually creative than their abled counterparts.
Health Care Without Shame Moser
Doctors can be so weird about sex questions -- but they shouldn't be. Learn how to talk to your doctor about sex issues from the basic to the unconventional, how to shop for the doctor that's right for you, and how to deal with doctors who treat you badly (or worse) when faced with your sexuality. Because let's face it; most people's sexuality isn't "lights out, missionary position" and we deserve to be treated well and have our questions answered no matter what we choose to do with our bodies.
Sex Over 50 Block + Bakos
If you're looking for a book that explains sex issues and how to have fun with sex in bodies over 50 that doesn't judge or act like people should stop having sex after five decades, then definitely add this one to your library. A bit dry but still full of essential, helpful and practical information for men and women.
Big Big Love Blank
It's not just a song by The Pixies: it's a really fantastic book by, for and about fat sex. If you're big or partnered with someone who is, then you'll want to check this book for everything from tips on sex positions and effective masturbation techniques to stigmas about being fat and sexy (and how to quash them), and how to navigate the world as a big, big sexy person, from dating to finding community.
Sex Toys 101 Venning + Cavanah
A beautiful full-color, glossy and slick looking guide to sex toys that is pretty much the modern classic on the topic. If you like, or are just interested in learning about, sex toys then you'll need this exhaustive book. Covering everything from dual-action vibrators to double dildoes, this field guide helps you identify exactly what you're looking for and make informed choices depending on what kind of sex you want to have. Smart, hip and right on the money.
Nerve's The Big Bang Taylor + Sharkey
This book tries to be a lot of things all at once and it accomplishes its goal perfectly: it's a New York hipster guide to sex (full of sexy American Apparel style photos); it covers sexual pleasure *and* birth control/STD information; and it has an extremely straight perspective on sex. Which, for once, is a really good thing in a sex book, as shown in funny and practical sections like "bondage for the rest of us".
Nerve's Guide to Sex Etiquette Taylor + Sharkey
It's snarky and stylistically over the top with a "Miss Manners" tone, but it's still a funny, entertaining and practical book on sex and dating etiquette. From vaginal farts to flirting, dating and one night stands to saying no (and yes), it's a worthwhile read. Heterosexual focus.
Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Dating and Sex Piven
No, it's not like the original where you learn how to escape a car sinking in a lake, but it's the sex and daitng equivalent -- lite, anyway. You won't learn how to get stuck Hello Kitty Vibrators out of body cavities (and the faking orgasm section is lame) but you will figure out what to do with a bad kisser, how to have sex in small spaces and dealing with exes when you're on a date.
Sex Disasters (And How To Survive Them) Moser + Hardy
This book is almost a requirement for anyone who tries a new sex act -- because it covers virtually everything that can go wrong during sex imaginable, from lost handcuff keys to stuck objects to even dealing with officers and authorities when you're caught in a compromising position. They consulted EMTs, doctors, lawyers, police and more for this one, and it shows.
Ultimate Guide to Sexual Fantasy Blue
Yup, it's my book -- and one that I'm extremely proud of! Sexual fantasy is an essential tool for hot sex, and here I explain how to use fantasies to help you achieve orgasm, how to use fantasies in partner sex, how to role-play, asking for a spanking (or anything else you want to ask for sexually), what to do in dominant or submissive sex roles, how to talk dirty, strip and give a lapdance, play sex games (I offer many); I suggest oodles of sexual fantasies and tell you how to make them come true... like my Sweet Life: Erotic Fantasies for Couples, but "hands on". Note the huge chapter on threesomes, multiple partner sex and voyeurism, and another whole chapter devoted to sexual fetishes.
