  • Russian communications watchdog Roskomnadzor has blocked access to the Russian version of PornHub and 10 other porn sites. It published an online statement Monday announcing a ban on 11 websites ruled to contain unlawful pornographic content based on a Krasnodar region’s court ruling. Roskomnadzor warned in its Monday statement that distributing illegal pornographic content online is punishable by a prison term of two to six years.

  • The average porn user may have more egalitarian views towards women than non-users, a contentious new study has suggested. Taylor Kohut, the study leader and a post-doctoral fellow in psychology, analysed data from 35 years of the General Social Survey, a US government-funded project that interviews around 24,000 men and women a year about a variety of issues.

  • Warning for animal torture and murder. A Houston woman has become the first person convicted in federal court of making and distributing “animal crush” fetish porn videos. Ashley Richards, 24, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to four counts of producing and one count of distributing the videos between 2010 and 2012. They depict the torture and killing of puppies, kittens and chickens.

  • Lisa Vandever writes, “A pioneering feminist filmmaker and prominent figure in the world of adult cinema, Candida Royalle died earlier this week, at the age of 64, after a lengthy fight with ovarian cancer. (…) according to filmmaker Jennifer Lyon Bell, “Candida was a true trailblazer, creating 100% unique porn for women and couples at a time when the concept of women as sexually independent beings (and as consumers of actual explicit movies) was not just bemusing, but shocking and appalling to many. Candida deflected naysayers, including a lot of angry feminists, with grace and poise.””

  • “…our ears perked up this week when we got some interesting data on national game console usage. It came from a porn site, of all places: YouPorn’s Gamers Statistics breakdown. The site delivers a host of server and search statistics derived from visitors who access it using a console’s built-in Web browser. While it’s fascinating to learn that porn hunters on Nintendo systems search for “zelda” and “pokemon” much more often than others, it’s the regional breakdowns that really got us interested.”

  • The New York City Board of Health voted on Wednesday to ease regulations on a controversial circumcision ritual practiced in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. The vote repealed a Bloomberg-era rule requiring parents to sign a consent form before the ritual, which involves a person performing a circumcision, known as a mohel, to use his mouth to suck blood away from the incision on an infant’s penis. The practice has been linked to herpes infections in infants.

  • Myles Jackman is Britain’s leading obscenity lawyer. But he does not merely defend the accused: his life’s great plan and purpose is to rid this country once and for all of its laws criminalising extreme pornography – laws that he regards as morally and socially iniquitous.

  • False clickbait: Men who pay for sex may be more inclined to sexual violence and have less empathy for women, according a study that made headlines last week. The study’s lead researcher was Melissa Farley, founder and director of Prostitution Research and Education, a nonprofit with the stated goal of abolishing prostitution. Farley told HuffPost that her data supports the view that prostitution is an institution of “sexual abuse” and “sexual aggression.”

  • Alabama is one step closer to mandating a 40 percent state excise tax on pornography — even online content. If passed into law, the proposal would effectually place a tariff on the gross receipts from the sale, rental or admission charges of pornographic material disseminated in print, videos and online downloads.

  • Back when adultery and gay sex were widely criminalized in the United States, when masturbation was thought to make you crazy and fellatio was taboo, the Kinsey Institute famously revealed that Americans were secretly less faithful, more gay, more various in their sexual practices and more perverse than most wanted to think. Sixty years later … three new books try to explain modern mating.

  • A new study suggests that ‘gaydar’ — the sixth sense by which many insist they can just tell that someone they meet isn’t heterosexual — is bad in two big ways. For starters, it doesn’t work. But more importantly, the concept of gaydar may be pretty harmful.

  • In a highly entertaining, much-needed, thorough debunking and utter trouncing, Ms. Naughty takes apart an article on ABC’s The Drum website “So what if your porn is feminist? The collusion of feminism with sexual violence“ by Laura McNally. If ABC contended for legitimacy in balanced reporting, her post would be run in response.

  • Homophobic attitudes may say a lot about the person who holds them, new research suggests. A new study of university students in Italy revealed that people who have strongly negative views of gay people also have higher levels of psychoticism and inappropriate coping mechanisms than those who are accepting of homosexuality.
