  • “Part of Ariel Schrag’s job in writing what Stephen Burt aptly calls “Trans Literature for the Masses” is to give a narrative gloss on the intricacies of a particular subculture—the focus on pronouns, preoccupation with bodily modification, particular lingo, what opinions are considered acceptable and unacceptable to voice regarding hot-button issues like gay marriage, sex parties with dildo blowjob contests, people named Riverrun, Le Tigre.”

  • On Thursday, the Toronto Star, one of the largest newspapers in North America and the most-read in Canada, published a story that is everything wrong with vaccine reporting in one dangerous package. The story was, at its core, a collection of unproven anecdotes that suggested, among other things, that dozens of women north of the border had been harmed or worse by the Gardasil HPV vaccine.

  • In order to prevent a repeat of the venereal disease (VD) epidemic of World War I, the U.S. government teamed up with artists, designers, and ad-men to set the story straight, plastering public-health warnings on walls at bases and training facilities just as military ranks were growing exponentially.

  • He explains that the structure of every sex party DJ set is the same, complete with a ramp-up, climax (pun intended) and a finish that creates a crescendo that will hopefully jive with the room’s overall sexual rhythm. The components of a successful “play”-list depends on a multitude of factors, from what time of night it is to how many people are on the dance floor to what the décor is like.

  • The number of Americans requiring emergency room care for injuries involving sex toys has approximately doubled since 2007, according to data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Much of that increase happened in 2012 and 2013, following the release of the wildly popular erotic novels in the Fifty Shades of Grey series. And the overwhelming majority of these injuries — 83 percent — require ”foreign body removals.”

  • Christian Grey is sexy. Christian Grey is a billionaire. Christian Grey is a sexy billionaire. Christian Grey is also, of course, a fictional character – a fantasy. The source of his fortune is left utterly vague: all that we’re told is that he owns something named Grey Enterprises Holdings, Inc. But here’s the weird thing: the fictional Christian Grey can teach us a lot about how today’s real-world wealth works, and what the word “billionaire” actually means.

  • The last time I was quoted in an SFist piece, a commenter was stalkery and fucked up to me, and the then-editor’s reaction to my dismay was, oh, he’s actually a great guy. This time, it was for a different writer and under a new editor, and I was quoted along with some really incredible people — but the sensationalist title casts us as “porn stars and professional fetishists,” whatever the fuck that means. I am neither. I was told it would be quotes from “50 sex-positive models, authors and luminaries.” The quotes are great, but this will be the very last time I help out, or get anywhere near, SFist.
