  • As Guardian reported previously, “eight of the nine undercover officers identified over the past 21 months are believed to have had intimate sexual relationships with protesters they were spying on.” Now Scotland Yard commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe’s claim that it is “almost inevitable” that undercover officers will form sexual relationships with activists has been condemned.

  • An exciting new addition to our existing holdings of Spilsbury papers helps clarify the working methods and interests of a famous (or notorious) forensic pathologist. Texts of lectures given by Spilsbury include one on death during autoerotic bondage which includes some correspondence on similar cases.

  • Aggie from Solopoly has a great new post directed at polyamorous couples on treating their non-primary partners well that begins, “Recently a poly friend observed, ‘There are no secondary people. Be careful how you treat everyone in relationships.’ …Fine, but how do you actually pull that off? Where’s the list of what to do?”

  • Adult crowdfunding website Offbeatr.com announced today that it is has raised more than $60,000 for its project creators. The operators said the site’s unique voting phase has allowed projects to enjoy an 80 percent success rate compared to 40 percent on other popular crowdfunding sites.

  • Verizon is now the third ISP to find itself being attacked in court directly by porn copyright trolls. Patrick Collins Inc., Third Degree Films, and Malibu Media have sued Verizon directly, asking a judge to throw out the many objections filed and to force Verizon to hand over subscriber contact information with intent to shame them into settling with the porn company. Verizon has objected over customers’ privacy and First Amendment rights.

  • A Google Rater has to decide what a porn searcher’s intention is when they rate or flag websites. The example of “spanking” is cited: information on parents spanking children from the University of Maine is regarded as “relevant”, a page about spanking fetish is “Slightly Relevant” and triggers the Porn flag. Porn is still deemed relevant – just not so much.

  • This reveals that the character in “The Sessions” used to be a SFSI switchboard volunteer, and decided to become a sex surrogate while working with us. In the ’70s, Cheryl Cohen Greene got into surrogate partner therapy to help others. One of her patients wrote about it, and now Helen Hunt is playing the therapist in a new film.

  • Germany is about to ban sex with animals, including the ‘pimping’ of farm animals for sex. Bestiality was legalised in Germany in 1969, the same year that gay sex was also removed from the criminal code. After that, sex with animals was only punishable if the animal was severely injured.

  • Scientists have decided to investigate the claims made by websites offering plastic surgery for female genitals. They looked at the top five U.K.-based websites that came up, and the top five U.S. ones. Here’s a sampling of “designer vagina” claims they found…

  • A new study has put to bed the perception that female porn stars have low self-esteem, have been sexually abused as children and are less psychologically healthy compared with other women. The study, which was published in the Journal of Sex Research, said it found no evidence to support the “damaged goods hypothesis” that actresses involved in the porn industry come from abusive backgrounds. Rather, the researchers found the women have higher self-esteem, a better quality of life and body image, and are more positive, with greater levels of spirituality.

  • Author of SM 101: A Realistic Introduction Jay Wiseman is going to be an expert witness in a BDSM ‘sex slave’ case. For a year, prosecutors and defense lawyers have jousted over the qualifications of expert witnesses who would testify as to whether Edward Bagley’s conduct with the young woman conformed to the practices of the bondage, discipline and sadomasochism, or BDSM, lifestyle. Prosecutors have alleged that in 2002, Bagley persuaded a 16-year-old girl to live with him and later coerced her into becoming his sex slave. Bagley purportedly tortured her, with the help of other defendants, until she was hospitalized in February 2009.

  • Florida’s Department of Health sent out a survey asking for intimate details of the sex lives of 4,100 young women, offering $10 gift cards in return. People are pissed and worried about their privacy. Hundreds of women in South Florida were among the survey recipients, their names pulled from the white pages by a private company, state officials said. They were asked to voluntarily tell the state how many men they’d had sex with in the past year, whether a man had ever poked holes in a condom to get them pregnant, and how they felt emotionally when they last had unprotected sex.

  • On December 5th, Jiz Lee will be participating in CLEVER, a think tank event produced by filmmaker and California College of the Arts professor Cheryl Dunye, and held at Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco. The think tank question at hand is: “Bootleg: Can Porn be Copyrighted?” Joining me in the discussion will be artist Annie Sprinkle, entertainment attorney Alex Austin, and producer Shine Louise Houston.

  • A study released on Friday challenges the myth, showing that four fifths of French women have watched a porn movie before – one in two of them without their partners. Fully 82 percent of women questioned said they had watched an X-rated film at least once before, compared to 99 percent of men, according to the study of 579 women carried out by the IFOP polling institute in September.

  • Casey Legler is a woman working as a male model. She looks wonderfully comfortable shrugging into tailored suits and chomping on cigars. But assigning words to the experience isn’t as easy. In an interview in her New York City studio, Legler steers around phrases like “gender identity” and “gender expression” in favor of having a conversation about freedom.

There is a great – and technically detailed – post over at scanlime right now called Hacking My Vagina. In it, Bay Area based Beth (M. Elizabeth Scott) hardware hacks a Lelo remote-controlled vibrator to try and make a sex toy that would facilitate a heightened feedback loop between herself and her vaginal orgasms. Basically, she wanted to mess with the remote and see if there were better ways the vibe might receive its information from the controller, and therefore execute different vibratory behaviors.

She uses a Lelo Lyla, which is from Lelo’s ingenious Sense Motion line (I reviewed the Sense Motion in October, 2011). It’s important to note that out of the box, Lelo’s vibe can be operated manually or by using the remote as a gesture-driven controller, like with a video game. It’s a haptic feedback-driven wonder. By turning, shaking and doing various hand gestures with the disk, the vibrator increases, decreases and can go through a range of pulses and programs ranging from steady buzz to a gradual roller coaster, to a thump-thump in varying degrees.

Beth wanted to improve the vibe’s input and hacked the Lyla’s remote. And hack the remote she did, reprogramming it with off-the-shelf Arduino, incorporating a sonar sensor and LED display. Beth also made her own plastic parts for the remote casing with a 3D printer and modeled her designs with Blender, resulting in an entirely open source project (her Arduino sketch is in the project’s GitHub repository). YAY! She writes,

My early prototype used a simple knob attached to a variable resistor, and that already seemed like a big improvement over the original LELO remote. I wanted to build a simple proof-of-concept remote that would just demonstrate the improved radio range and responsiveness, without doing anything particularly fancy. After that, I planned to dabble in more esoteric input devices. Audio spectra, conductive fabric, capacitive sensors embedded in lingerie, and so on. The Arduino library I ended up writing for this project offers some great opportunities for further tinkering.

Here’s a video of the resulting prototype:

But how was it? Unfortunately we don’t find out much about how it works in regard to orgasm, or if Beth actually “hacked her vagina” into becoming more of a customizable, or improved erotic feedback loop. Still, Beth writes,

For different kinds of play, it may make sense to have different scaling algorithms for converting distance to intensity. I’m interested in making the firmware more versatile, but not at the expense of reducing its intuitive quality. The “Lock” mode is already way too unintuitive for my tastes. Perhaps an additional flavor of user interface, via an accelerometer or SoftPot would help.

But honestly, the thing I’m most excited about improving isn’t even technical. In some ways, this kind of toy feels like a musical instrument. It is a simple machine with very few inputs, but it interacts with your body in such a way that it opens up a broad array of techniques that can each be mastered. I’m looking forward to spending more time with it and learning how to play.

* Yes, “hacking my vagina” sounds painful to me, too. I think it’s also important to note here that the vibe used in this hardware hack provides no clitoral stimulation. The vibrator is for vaginal orgasms (it’s insertable), which are not easy orgasms for a number of women to have. It’s a “one size fits some” scenario in terms of getting off. Hold the vibe on your clit and that’s a different story, but then the vibe is no longer “hands-free.” And NO – this vibrator is absolutely NOT safe for anal insertion.

24 November 2012
This would be a great ad - it's a spec for Durex, so it's not the company's ad, but rather the brilliant on-spec (unpaid, with the hope of winning business) creation of Charlotte Rabate. Not sexually explicit, but I think you'll like it anyway :)
