It’s interesting that a 15 year old in the US cannot get the morning after pill without prescription or parents knowing.

In the UK there are a few choices but all are anonymous and without telling the parents :

-Doctors are allowed to give the pill on prescription
-They can get the pill from a sexual advice clinic
-They can get it from a pharmacy though officially it should only be sold to under 16s with medical supervision (i.e. the girl is referred to a doctor or sexual advise clinic – note the latter is not like some of those in the US, they are not judgemental and they will not try and talk the girl out of abortion). In the UK we have odd laws for the different countries though, so the Welsh can get it free from a pharmacy under 16 whereas everywhere else they have to pay for it (approx £25).

Also available from: any family planning clinic, any genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic or sexual health clinic, any NHS walk-in centre, any young persons’ clinic or Brook Advisory Centre, some hospital accident and emergency (A&E) departments.

They can also get the coil from the GP, family planning centre and some young persons/Brook advisory centres.

I’m in a long term relationship and we do not want children, access to the pill in an emergency is a fundamental right for us in the UK and I’m so glad we are not led by the religious hysterics that you so often highlight for the US.

A pregnant 15 year old will not get the morning after pill WITHOUT a prescription, OR the parent knowing about it.
The pregnant 15 year old cannot vote.
The parent CAN vote.
Politics overrode medicine. Why are you surprised?

I suppose it’s ok that technology can bring a child to a male/female couple who can’t have kids that could end up in a situation where there is a parent missing but not that the same technology can be used to allow a male/male or female/female (or any other combination) that have just as much chance of being stable and loving parents.

It’s shocking he genuinely believes a gay couple will not be proper parents or that a straight couple (on the grounds that the latter have a penis and a vagina that could be used to conceive) are automatically good parents for a child.

There are so many cases of bad male/female couples, even those that just have child after child even though they can’t look after them properly. In the UK we had a case in 2009 of a couple who have every kid they have (13 born, 1 on the way) taken into adoption as they are deemed as unfit to look after the kids through neglect, aggression and general lack of parental ability – yet that, while extreme, is the sort of relationship deemed ok by Santorum?? We also have similar issues with sex workers in the UK, countless letter pages, from the notorious lefty Guardian to even the free papers (e.g. Metro) are stuffed with men and women talking about sex workers as if they were all forced into it, they’re abused, they’re kidnapped from Europe, they’re all hooked on drugs and made to do it etc etc. Even after an actual sex worker responds about how they enjoy their job, enjoy the money and are doing it out of free will, the attitude remains with the negative assumptions about sex workers being applied to all of them, regardless of situation.
