Remembering Explicit Erotic Comics at Last Gasp

Yesterday afternoon I visited the giant warehouse of underground and indie book publisher and distributor Last Gasp (here in San Francisco). I was glad I brought my camera; I tried to capture the incredible vibe of the place and shot many photos of their vintage magic poster collection. The ones they have are originals of posters I’ve carefully collected over the years and have on the walls of my bedroom. To say that I’m envious is an understatement. I also got snaps of various explicit erotic comics that I thought would be fun to show you.

The entire (NSFW) gallery of my visit is here on Daily Violet.

It was not the first time I’d been to Last Gasp, as I’m a regular at their famous annual holiday party – a bizarre private affair packed with artists, writers, punk rockers, subculture icons, and plenty of Mission burritos. I’m also a longtime friend of publisher Ron Turner. Anyway, the point is that I’m no stranger to their stacks but yesterday I got swept away seeing the vast stock of explicit erotic comics. It was like seeing old friends (the way one remembers a close relationship with a fiction novel and its characters) and it reminded me of my first experiences with porn. That would be thanks to finding a stack of Heavy Metal magazines when I was a teen.

I took photos of favorites. I’ve been looking online to see if any of these truly fantastic – and still veeeery erotic – porn comics have migrated to cyberspace, but as far as I can tell, none have. I especially wanted to introduce you to Liz and Beth, Young Witches, Bondage Fairies, Birdland, Housewives at Play, Michael Manning and the whole Eros stable… And it seems to me these would visually translate well to tablets and even ereaders. I also see that you can’t really get these on Amazon, and so I’m really glad Last Gasp is keeping this art form viable and available.

  1. They definitely have migrated to cyberspace, that’s where I met with most of then the first time, but it’s in pirated versions so you have to know where to look and be OK with the artists not getting anything in return for your reading pleasure.
