At the risk of being a pedant: the freshly ovulated egg only lives for a day and a half if not fertilized, and it takes 6-7 days to travel from the ovary to the uterus. So the egg has to be fertilized at the ovary, or in the very outermost part of the oviducts.
OK, you can now return to the discussion of sexism and the attack on contraception.

The sexism in Maddow's piece was really entirely unnecessary - and yes, I know that men are less traditionally victims of the patriarchy and we don't get to complain about sexism, but really, it was offensive and alienating. Telling men to go take a load off while a host has a little chat with the girls about basic automotive care or something similarly stereotypical would generate every ounce of the outrage it deserved, and while this is a less common type of incident, it's equally egregious. I don't particularly want to watch Maddow any more.

It is also, I think, a mistake to assume that women understand any more about reproductive biology in general. That vein of ignorance runs deep and wide and indiscriminately through American society.

And finally, I really don't think that the ignorance of politicians is at all the point. Romney and Perry and the like don't care in the least about the ramifications of their positions. They only care about whose vote they can win by endorsing them. Viewed in that light, I suppose Maddow's segment wasn't a waste, because it's the voters who need to understand what their votes entail, but I frankly think that this is a political non-issue, because the same people who'd support a Life at Conception Amendment are the ones who mostly believe that contraception is a force for societal ill anyway and wouldn't be any real loss.

In all, I feel like I - a biologist, extremely well-versed in these matters, and about as liberal an individual as you can find - was attacked, and not for any good reason. Mitt Romney is a bad man, and the people who support him either can't see that or don't care and aren't going to change their votes based on something like this.
