@Elf — Do you know if they do it for sexual pleasure or social communication? Dogs lick their genitals too, but I don’t think they lick other dogs’ genitals for pleasure. They also lick asses, but I think that’s about communicating (ew) food sources (ew). Then again, I could be wrong, I’m far from a dog-behavior expert.

You know, it just so happened that I’ve been thinking about Sperm Wars recently trying to remember the title! It does make the biological argument for sexual behavior, even when the evidence is…unexplored, to say the least (but what does Science know about the wet dreams of female animals!? I must know!). That said, it falls into the eternal idiot trap of pretending something doesn’t exist (like, say, female domination and male submission) if it doesn’t fit the evolutionary psychology mold (because female submission and male domination do, I guess?). Also it suggests that bi- and homosexuality are mere “practice” for straight relationships. So, all in all, some good ideas and bad ones.

The book “Sperm Wars” suggests oral sex was invented so you could get up close and visually inspect genitals for health, and smell and taste them to see if the person had been with someone else recently.

Interesting theory that reminds me of the time a girlfriend of mine knew her boyfriend was cheating on her when she offered him a blowjob and he refused. He didn’t want her to smell the condom on his dick. Always wash after illicit sex!

Doesn’t seem like bonobos much care about if you’ve been with others, and oral sex is a fun thing to do when you’re sitting around a tropical forest.
