http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/17/fashion/sundaystyles/17ZACH.html?oref=login

This is a gay re-education program. This is not what Cross Creek is. Cross creek is abusive and criminal and should be closed down, but to portray it as one of these programs is wrong and will hurt Xandir, the effort against Cross Creek, and the next survivor who wants to tell their story.

Think about it

Another thing that will turn readers off is titles that are misleading. http://www.tinynibbles.com/blogarchives/2011/06/harrowing-account-of-queer-teens-abduction.html

In paragraph two the writer contradicts the title of the article by saying WWASP isn't for profit. Readers will dismiss the entire story because of that.

If you think I'm being rough wait until Cross Creek weighs in. They have money and media contacts, and people will believe them. The slightest hint of deception will give them reason to doubt you. People don't want to believe this story. Its an abuse story. Don't give them ammunition.

The people who run these programs belong in prison. They are serial child abusers. But don't think that they're stupid. They'll use the "re-education school" label to paint you as a liar. And, they'll be successful. They've operated under the public eye for decades because they're very intelligent.

I'm a survivor of the Elan School, the program most of these troubled teen programs sprang from. While they were horribly homophobic, I think making Cross Creek sound like a Gay to Straight conversion program by calling it a re-education school is deceptive. I've never heard it called that, and neither has anyone else up till now. Keep in mind that outside our bubble people think you're talking about the Ex-gay movement, and if they find out it isn't one of those programs, they'll turn on you.

I admire what you've done Xandir, but don't let the media portray this as something it's not. That would do you and the fight against these programs more harm than good.

Thanks Violet. This story about another frightening program to "de-homosexualize" -- the phrase I imagine the programmers used, not that I'm calling Xandir homosexual -- is especially poignant considering the mainstream media attention on Kirk Murphy, whose family literally beat his othersexual traits out of him and who took his own life three decades later. http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/06/07/sissy.boy.experiment/index.html .

Thanks so much for interviewing her. Im really glad to see that people and the media are being receptive to her story and her courage to speak up about it is so great! A friend of mine has talked to me about a similar school he attended and the schools facebook page is full of comments about how bad of an experience the teenagers had there. I hope her bravery will give others the courage to say something too.

This is an amazing follow up Violet! I'm so happy to hear that Zandir has taken a public stand in revealing what she faced at Cross Creek. I read her story yesterday and even after what this amazing young woman has faced she sounds so poised and mature.
Good for her and if she reads this congratulations to her, she is a true mentor to others like her!
