Robbie, may I suggest that the police don’t really give a shit about taking porn shops to task about selling unrated and X-Rated videos (outside NT and ACT) is because they have better things to do with their time. You know, like catching criminals. Fred Nile, Melinda Tankard Reist and the rest of their ACL cohorts should be ignored. Why they get so much time with politicians is beyond me.

Why the hell is Dines getting so much airtime on the ABC? So far we’ve had QandA, an interview on Radio National, a broadcast of a debate at the Sydney Writers Festival, another broadcast of one of her lectures today and yet more radio on local ABC in Newcastle.

We’ve made a lot of progress, and lost a little of it lately, but things are better than they were. One of the best replies to Dines’ insanity that I’ve read. The Australian Law Reform Commission is currently undertaking the first review of Australia’s Classification Act since it was introduced in 1995. The government has been forced to this position because the Classification Act is completely broken and large quantities of adult material is being sold unclassified. The police are not interested in prosecution because many of them like to watch porn and magistrates are over big fines for selling it in the states because many of them watch it as well. We could be about to see an outbreak of common sense and public opinion on censorship for the first time in years. So the fight back is on. Its no coincidence that Dines’ is here at the moment.

Porn is most definitely NOT “de-facto illegal” in Australia. I live a couple of hundred metres from a very well-known sex shop in Brisbane, Australia which has plenty of porn for sale openly, including porn that is illegal under Queensland law, the most restrictive in Australia.

While it is illegal in every state to sell X-rated material (as opposed to R-rated) it is a simple matter to buy it by mail order from the Australian Capital Territory, where selling X-rated porn is legal.

What concerns me the most here is that this woman supposedly holds degrees. This gives an air of authority to her words that more and more people find obviously unscientific and unfounded. Perhaps this is naive, but is Ms. Dines not answerable to her peers? If a doctor of medicine consistently and regularly performs badly, it is my understanding that they can have their license to practice medicine restricted or removed. Are there no others in her profession that can call this woman on the carpet and ask ‘what the hell are you talking about? Where is your empirical data? Where is the research to back up these claims?’

Sigh. Excellent article. Thanks for keeping this woman on the radar, as she appears to be quite dangerous to the pursuit of knowledge and pleasure.

Wow, that’s rough. I always wonder about people like that. I wonder where they came from and why they think that way. Anyone so zealous has to have a reason for being so. I just wish she wasn’t so zealous in a way that seems to be fairly clearly (scientifically supported) against the best interests of society at large.
