Monday Nibbles: Sasha Grey Retires, Demi And Kutcher On Sex Trafficking, More Porn Wikileaks Info, US Military Rape Epidemic

Sasha Grey

  • A shocking expose on the frequency of soldier-on-soldier rape in the US military: 1 in 15 men, and 1 in 5 women, making female service people more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than to die in combat: The Military’s Secret Shame (Newsweek; read it one one page with Readability)
  • I’m sure this will turn out well… Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher (“DNA Foundation”), Justin Timberlake, Sean Penn, Isaiah Mustafa, Jaime Foxx , Pete Cashmore and more have launched a campaign today called Real Men Don’t Buy Girls, aimed at sex trafficking. They have teamed up with an org called Shared Hope – which (they may not realize) happen to be extremists that are hardcore anti-pornography and use the old, false ‘porn makes men rape’ and ‘porn makes men into child molseters’ claims. For fuck’s sake – can’t you guys click a few links before you team up with wingnuts? IMO, this shit just makes Pete look even more desperate. Yes, they made videos: Real men join stars in fight against slavery (thecnnfreedomproject.blogs.cnn.com)
  • It’s being reported as “more than 100” but the actual number of Senator signatures is 42 – you can tell by the headlines alone which news outlets have regurgitated the Southern Baptist’s false press release and who didn’t… Anti-porn Christians got US Senators to sign a petition proving that Senators are either deeply problematic when it comes to pushing Christian morality as part of their jobs, or will sign literally anything they’re told to: Did Your Congressperson Just Sign Fallacious, Religious Anti-Porn Propaganda? (Our Porn, Ourselves)

  1. Michael – thank you for your comment. You know, I am very sensitive about our service people (they are extremely important to me), and what the Newsweek article reported upset me on a core level. My grandfather died in service, my father disappeared in service, and my adopted mother is an officer. Many personal friends have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. So I have to thank Vera for chiming in on the measure of the article.

However, now Thomas and I are in conversation about verifying the Newsweek numbers, and reporting what we find out. So glad you both raised these questions.

    xo

  2. I think there may be some confusion about the military rape statistics. The 1-in-5 for women and 1-in-15 for men figures refer to how many military victims of rape will report it, not how many members of the military will be raped. It corresponds to the Pentagon estimate of only 20% of female victims reporting that’s mentioned elsewhere in the article.

I disagree with Michael that the article is sensationalized, though. I think it’s pretty measured.

  3. Violet, I love you and all of your work, but I think you got caught up in the sensationalism of that Newsweek article. I don’t blame you, after I read it I had to take a few minutes to calm down. After that I thought about it and I just don’t see how this could be true. I’m not saying that sexual assault doesn’t happen in the military, but 50,000 men reporting sexual trauma? If this is true the military is filled with sexual predators. Even if you have a negative view of the military you cant really believe its filled with rapists.

  4. I read the article on Porn Wikileaks, then went to the PWL site to see what it was all about. I was curious if something they claim is true: “The gay and transexual performers operate in a world where HIV is common and unavoidable. HIV is not tested for in Gay and Tranny porn because many of the participants in this field already have HIV. It’s unfair for the girls and the straight men in porn to have to mix with these high risk players…”

So, is it it true that some/many/all performers in gay and or transexual porn are not tested for HIV? If it is true, it’s extremely disturbing and borders on criminal in some places.

I do want to state i do not in any way agree with PWL giving out names and addresses of porn stars. I’m also not impressed with the way they talk about female performers.
