Or they just put sex in it because sex sells... and it wouldn't be HBO/Showtime otherwise.

I was so disgusted with the author of this author after reading this post. When I found out today that the series had been put on tv I had to fist-pump. I'm a lady and pretty much all I read is sci-fi and fantasy and I play Dungeons & Dragons as well. Apparently this qualifies me for manhood. Gotta eye-roll at people like this.

What's interesting too is that the books have sexual contant in them - it's part of the story fabric, so it's not like no one knew the was part of the narrative.

This makes me think of my mom, who is a huge sci-fi fan but doesn't like it when things get sexually graphic.

I read that piece a few days ago and lawled because it was so heavily laden with sarcasm that it should have been on The Onion. Read it again with humor switched on and I think you'll pick up on it. Not to say that women don't like porn - we know that's true - but to say that men don't care about it at all and that it's only there to entice women into watching is clearly a joke. ;)

Boy fiction... What does that even mean!?

Because books & TV shows now have gender roles?

Hilariously stoopid article by NYT

I had to look up who Lorrie Moore was. I do however know the works of Ursula Le Guin, Octavia Butler, Andre Norton and so on. There is even an entire sub-genre of Feminist Speculative Fiction which encompasses both Sci-fi and Fantasy. This has been so for decades and includes such writers as Charlotte Perkins Gilman in the early 20th century. We can even consider Mary Shelley as one of the first prior to that. There have been notable SF excursions by some the most well known literary writers such as Margaret Atwood in The Handmaid's Tale as well as works by such notables as Doris Lessing. Even non-English works appear such as with the Russian author Tatiana Tolstoya. I don't know where this NYT writer got their education but it is sorely lacking in breadth. Thanks for calling this out.

Is she for real? What, because her and her snobbish clique of mates don't read a specific type of book, the rest of us in the world are chop liver? What happened to the idea that at one time was held so sacred, that journalists, even opinion piece journalists, must hold true at least a small iota of objectivity? And aren't they supposed to know that anecdotal is just that?

I'm appalled though not surprised, which only makes it worse. I feel dirty and not in the sexy fun times way.
