The Sexademic – Jessi Fischer – Debates Anti-Porn Activist Shelley Lubben at Cambridge

Tonight The Sexademic (Jessi Fischer) is en route to Cambridge to debate born-again Christian and anti-porn legislation activist Shelley Lubben tomorrow. As you may know, Sexademic is a friend and a longtime hardworking co-volunteer at SFSI, the multi-decade outlet for non-judgmental and accurate sex information. Lubben, as you may know is the reason I gave my first Google Tech Talk on sexual privacy online a couple years ago. Lubben had lobbied Google to tell their employees about the evils and dangers of pornography and persuade them to censor their product; I was invited as a counterpoint. If you watch my talk, you’ll see me discover onstage that Lubben pulled out of giving her Google talk when Google employees offered to help Lubben get data, facts and statistics to support her talk – and Lubben panicked and canceled her talk at the last minute.

* Keep up with The Sexademic as she Tweets her experience.
* Look for her posts on The Sexademic blog.

Lubben is a big proponent of CP-80, participates in Patrick Trueman’s Morality in Media campaigns (including current and past political lobbying), tried to get a “porn tax” bill passed in California, campaigned to get the Marriott hotel chain to remove porn, and works in concert with Gail Dines on feminist anti-pornography campaigns, political lobbying and various “feminist” anti-porn media.

An unsympathetic unofficial documentary about Lubben has been filmed, called The Devil and Shelly Lubben (here is part one). I’ve embedded part two of the film after the jump as I find it especially interesting – anyone who has heard that women in porn are raped, coerced, fed drugs or just want to hear what getting a job in porn or working in porn is like from a power-over aspect will find it fascinating. Episodes 3 and 4 are forthcoming and you can look for them at Julie Meadows’ blog.

I’m really hoping tomorrow’s debate will be filmed or recorded – if you are there, record it and I will host it, post it and take care of getting it online. While I think the debate might be tense I mostly think it will be frustrating for the following reasons:

* Fischer has been focusing on her points and is eager for a debate.
* Lubben relies on maintaining a victim status to persuade audiences.
* Fischer is knowledgeable about human sexuality, psychology, laws around pornography and obscenity, and is well-versed in the realities of the present-day porn industry.
* Lubben is emotionally unstable – which is worrisome – and tends to cry when losing an audience.
* Fischer wants to explore the pros and cons of porn in a rational context.
* Lubben is reliant on the fact that her audience is Christian – or should be.
* Fischer wants a debate.
* Lubben has no data to back her assertions.

I hope it’s exciting. I also hope that whoever is putting Lubben with a real opponent with actual facts understands how delicate Lubben’s psyche is.

  1. Hi,

I agree on the fact that Shelley Lubben was emotionally unstable…but she never was! She wasn’t before making porn, and certainly not after. Pornography’s lifestyle never had the reputation to make more balanced human beings. And after having left pornography, she turned to religion. We all know that sex and religion don’t sleep in the same bed, and it did discredit a lot of her testimony. But still, in this case I give her the benefice of the doubt, because she may not have the emotional balance and knowledge, to explain and defend her case, but she’s the one who was fucked like an animal…by animals!!! Sometimes we have to open our mind and try to have empathy for the other.

  2. Oh! That’s so sweet, because I’m a fan of yours. I’ve had your “Our Porn, Ourselves” link on my blog for some time. You’re work is incredible and I’m certain I am not even fully aware of just how incredible it really is. :)

I, personally, hope there is an opportunity to explore the pros and cons of pornography, and sex work in general, in the near future, without the threat of being attacked by people like Dines and Lubben. That would be very nice.

  3. Hello, Violet! First of all, thank you for featuring the videos on your site. I watched your Google Tech Talk and it is illuminating. I’ll have to reference it in future posts. Thank you for everything that you do.

“The Devil And Shelley Lubben, Episode 2” was pulled from YouTube some time last night and we don’t know what about the video violated YouTube’s terms of use, but it is up now at http://www.TheDevilAndShelleyLubben.com, with an embed code below the video so you can re-upload it if you wish.

Thank you, again, and please email me if you would like to be added to the list of writers and bloggers I email with updates!

  4. Hi Violet,

I couldn’t agree more with your take on Ms. Lubben. It would not surprise me in the least if she comes completely unhinged during this debate. She is in so much denial about things, her bottom may be fast approaching.

  5. I haven’t seen anything from you regarding the fight over Title X funds in Congress that could shut down women’s health/reproductive clinics and Planned Parenthood. Do you plan to write anything about it? It seems like the news isn’t reporting much about it, so it’s not a well-known issue, but it could impact thousands of families. It’s sad, because the women who can’t afford these services otherwise are the ones who *really* can’t afford kids!

  6. Hi Violet,
I’m a Cambridge student and I’m attending the debate tomorrow while I write a piece on modern pornography for the student paper. I also hope it will be a sensible debate and any false data gets called out.

  7. I agree 100%. I have a personal investment to know what is positive and what is whitewash about porn, and I’ve worked hard to find that (obviously, as outlets like AVN hate and attack me for pointing out things like their horrifying racism).

I’m with you – I want a real debate. We would all benefit. Sexademic would be great for the reasonable pro-porn side. The other side…. well, it requires more than the fervor of one religion, to say the least.

  8. While I strongly disagree with the anti-porn perspective personally, I feel like it is important to listen to criticism of the industry. (Lubben doesn’t exactly present real criticism but more of illogical BS.)

I would enjoy seeing someone who isn’t emotionally unbalanced and irrational present a case against pornography.
