@Loveofmystery: The article was in New York magazine, not the New Yorker. The New Yorker actually had a pretty decent article about the porn industry some years ago.

Nice work, thank you. You do an excellent job of confronting the difficult questions head-on and objectively.

I can attest to this: "Remember that your sexual interests and turn-ons will evolve and change throughout your entire life. None of these articles will tell you this. One of the most common and awful Fear-Uncertainty-Doubt points the Fox and CNN outlets try to make you believe is that your frustration will never end. It’s a lie."

Thank you for straightening things out on this topic.
I read the piece yesterday and it started my mind. Even though I suffer none of the "symptoms" indicated in the article, it had me question my habits.

Thank you for the perspective. This is the other reason why I really like your blog (the first one being all the eye candy and sex positive gems you harvest on the (not so) dryland of the Internet).

Yes, I agree that was poor journalism. Hey, maybe I could write for the New Yorker. Most of the comments were kind of blah too, generalized.

The author decided that by giving up watching porn for four days that it must be porn that is the problem. There are so many factors at play here. Maybe it's his trying to have sex with random people whenever he gets the chance, which is kind of what it sounded like.

And to the complaints of men being raised on porn, I say just make better porn.

Yikes.

The "blahblahblah" bit in my response refers to the articles to which you refer. I've been sloppy in my citations.

blahblahblahblah

I'm married and monogamous. The ideas garnered from good porn have been appreciated. If "addiction" is what causes morning wood, well, oh darn.

If anything, the lack of good porn is a problem.

Media in general? Um, I'm watching Al Jazeera right now. There are plenty of opportunities for pre-judgements to expose themselves. Particularly once you compare coverage between media outlets.

*Media* is the crucial word. There is nothing in that word related to people. It's the mechanism through which ideas are exposed. Never confuse media with the idea, even though that appears to happen often.

And that Atlantic article is next - as is the author. I'm getting ramped up again... :)

*Applause*

Porn is not going to make someone unable to have healthy relationships. It's something we use when the time is right. IF you're having relationship problems, you need to examine what needs are being met v. your wants as a person. Sometimes it's just about being honest with yourself.

There's a bit more even handed article in the recent Atlantic -- http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/01/hard-core/8327/ -- except where the author make gross generalizations from one particular experience of hers.

Thanks for such a thoughtful, balanced piece, V. I definitely would have wanted to know about Rothbart's article, would have read it and probably still will. But based on your observations and, if nothing else, pointing out what was not broached, I'll be prepared to read it with a more critical eye. Which I should probably *always* do with any media on the subject of sex these days, but your post here served as a great reminder. So glad you're around!
