Cyber(Sex) Monday: Top Sex Toys to Give and Get

I felt a pang of solidarity when my friend Veronica expressed her disappointment that “Cyber Monday” was not, in fact, about cybersex.

Setting out to remedy this, I finished up my erotic holiday gift guide (a companion to the list, This Year’s Top Hot Sex Books for Gifting, Coveting) and I think you’ll be pleased. Or at least amused, and hopefully as filled with want for some of the gems on this list as I am.

I have had personal experience with all of the shops I link to, and these I personally recommend. The toy materials and lubricant ingredients are all body-safe, and if I have not owned the recommended item, I have owned and examined something similar from the maker.

A few tips for the erotic gift giver: Always make sure you have some inkling your gift will be well received. If she watched “Secretary” and thought it was gross, don’t get her a Paul Seville paddle while hoping for the best. For first-time toys, always pick a small or medium before a large (unless you know a large is desired). First vibrators: best to get one with adjustable speeds, rather than on/off styles, so the user can decide what speed they like, rather than all or nothing. Britain’s Close Call With Porn Filters: Two Perspectives

Last week I got an email from Zack Whittaker, ZDNet’s iGeneration blogger. He sent me an article on BBC that had stats about wee ones looking at pr0ns that made it look like an epidemic — an impossible set of stats, to my eyes. However, like these things go, conservative officials had taken the data porn (that’s what it is, folks) at face value and there was talk that the House of Commons was considering making ISP’s put anti-porn filters on their internets, as a default, so people who did not want filters would need to “opt-in.”

It would be like when Google rolled out Instant and didn’t tell anyone it was filtered (check this out). Or like how no one knows Flickr is extremely filtered by default because they don’t even hint that you can take Safe filtering off, or tell you how to do it.

After writing the article, I am mostly like, WTF England. You’re already looking like the Twit Olympics with Ed Vaizey and “we don’t need no net neutrality.”

So Mr. Whittaker and I had a blogger face-off about it. He wrote Online porn ‘opt in’ proposed to ISP’s and I wrote Britain Considers ISP Filters To Save The Children: Flawed Logic. Huge fights in the comments, especially mine. Someone wrote that the only answer here in the US is to force all adult sites onto .XXX domains. Another wrote from Australia, who are dealing with their own issues. No one seemed to notice that I pointed out the data being used to scare them — is bullshit.

I’m mostly irritated at the BBC for citing the lazy, unsubstantiated numbers that Psychologies Magazine pulled out of their ass — as if they were actual study data, and giving other media and news outlets the platform to write “according to the BBC.” Because now they will.

Kink Your Kindle: 2010′s Top Hot Sex Books for Gifting, Coveting

I look at dozens and dozens of sex books all year; authors and publishers send them to me, and I love it. My personal library has overgrown several six-foot-tall bookcases, and books are piled tastefully all over my flat. They are all very naughty books. At the end of the year I usually do a popular “Best Books” post. This year I thought it would be more useful if I posted it before the holidays.

I’m noticing that while more people are buying and reading books than ever before, current organizational/search systems on sites like Amazon don’t quite fit the way readers now discover new books. It is actually getting more challenging to find Amazon’s top erotica (and sex nonfiction) books because free Kindle selections have muddied the search waters; meanwhile looking at “popular” doesn’t get you new releases. What’s worse is Barnes and Noble. Talk about making discovery difficult. The Color Nook is great, but finding erotica (or any category exploration) on their site is impossible: this might just kill them. Most of all, with Amazon’s new problem and Barnes’ big problem — how do you know which ones are good? Which ones are explicit, accurate, well written, and sex-positive? Will the collection of couples’ erotica excite and inspire with new fantasies while delivering the hardcore goods, and be readable and unpredictable — or will it be like Penthouse Letters on a bad, sad and moralistic day?

I am here to help. I know the landscape really well: it’s my job. And my passion. In the list below you’ll find fiction and non-fiction from this year’s releases that I really think are the cream of the crop. I also suggest browsing off this list by reputation: the authors and editors below are among the best, so if you look for work by authors they’ve worked with you’ll strike gold almost every time. Disclosure: I put two of my new titles on the list in case you want to know which ones I love; I’m not shilling for myself, I simply stand behind my work as well as being very proud of the authors I get to publish. On Thanksgiving, Naomi brought a present into the bedroom. “I want you to wear this tonight,” she said. I unwrapped the gift quickly, then pulled out a shiny black, vinyl apron.

“Over my dress?” I asked naively.

“That is your dress.”
