“That’s not a real woman!” is not a very nice thing to say. I don’t know Ms. Stone personally, but I find it difficult to believe your claim that she is not a woman. I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she is, in fact, quite real, and quite female.

Why can’t we all be “real women”? Why does someone have to be a certain size to be considered “real”?

Though I’m not a big fan of this particular model, can’t we all agree that she is a better ideal than Kate Moss? Maybe she’s not the same size as the average woman, but she’s a model! She’s not supposed to be average!

We’re not talking about art. We’re not talking about education. We’re talking about a woman whose only job is to look good in an outfit so that other women will want to buy it. What the hell are you people expecting?

The fashion world does not care about the self image of teenage girls, or women of any age for that matter. They look down on average people like insects. Maybe this decade ribs are out and boobs are in. It’s pretty random, and everybody shouting about how it isn’t enough is missing the entire point. It’s not their job to give your daughters self-esteem, it’s the parent’s.

And for crap’s sake, stop evangelizing plus-sized models. Have you heard about the obesity epidemic? It’s almost as bad to be fat as it is to be anorexic. At least Lara Stone looks fairly healthy.

I think the problem is that we spend so much time talking about size & weight, its no great feat to have a plus sized model featured in a magazine if it is in bold and italic all over the page. It’s sort of like how Disney made a big deal of having a black princess, defeats the concept of acceptance and moving forward, Like saying “see we told you we are PC”.

A beautiful girl is a beautiful girl weather she has a gap in her teeth or not, women are so misrepresented in fashion and mainstream media, no wonder we have come to scrutinise the tiniest freckle as a fatal flaw. When fashion starts to celebrate beauty in all of its shapes, sizes and images then perhaps we can congratulate it.

If she was being viewed in a Hall of Mirrors at a fairground, *then* she’d have curves everywhere, not just around her breasts. Otherwise, I can’t see any difference between her and any of the other fashion models that show up in the pages of newspapers and magazines. I have to chuckle at the notion that her imperfections make her more “normal”. Sorry Lara, you still like you could use a square meal or four.

I wasn’t aware that the ol’ Grauniad (sorry, force of habit, thanks to memories of their bad old days of heavy newsprint and frequent misprints) as anti-porn – probably because I don’t often read stuff on their from beyond the tech section.
