I am NOT happy about this. Rinse, repeat, repeat (iTunes link). Looks like I’ll be talking to paranoid and potentially infected teens on the crisis lines (and via email) for the forseeable future. On CNN:

(CNN) — The health care reform legislation that President Obama signed recently isn’t only about insurance coverage — there’s also a renewal of $50 million per year for five years for abstinence-focused education.

Programs that receive this funding must “teach that abstinence from sexual activity is the only certain way to avoid out-of-wedlock pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and other associated health problems,” according to the Department of Health and Human Services. To qualify, they must also teach that sex before marriage is “likely to have harmful psychological and physical effects.” These are part of the “A-H definition,” requirements for programs to receive abstinence funding under Title V of the Social Security Act.

“Title V is trying to make sure that kids are being given a message that saving sex and childbearing for marriage is the safest, healthiest, best choice,” said Scott Phelps, executive director of Abstinence & Marriage Education Partnership. Public schools hire educators from this organization to teach abstinence, and may use Title V funding for it, he said.

In Phelps’ experience — he started his abstinence education work in Chicago, Illinois, 10 years ago — the abstinence message is embraced by kids, even some who have already become sexually active. “They didn’t realize they could stop,” he said.

Organizations promoting evidence-based sex education say it’s troubling that this $250 million will go to state programs that have not been shown to work.(…read more, cnn.com, thanks Praemedia)

In Austin at SXSW a few weeks ago, adorable uber-geek and thirty-year-old virgin Chris Pirillo invaded my morning hangover haze to do what turned out to be a really fantastic interview in Who Is Violet Blue? His writeup about me is so flattering, I’m doing the equivalent of a 24-48-hour blush session. Chris is hilarious, and he’s my number one choice for human hangover medicine. Apply Pirillo liberally to affected areas, laugh, and relax. Which is exactly what I did, by way of this wonderful interview. And the weird thing is, the YouTube comments are not 100% evil. It’s a miracle! I think that’s a testament the power of Pirillo’s superlative, no-bullshit, community building skillz. Snip:

(…) You might have seen her in Macheads (and if you haven’t, there’s no time like the present to watch the movie).

She tells it like it is, holding nothing back. She does so in a way that will make you stop and think about things – making you laugh all the way.

Given the subject material at hand (sex!), you’d think that a person would be uncomfortable talking to Violet about it. However, that isn’t the case at all. She may be open and direct, but it is also obvious that she is an amazing communicator – even if I happened to stumble here and there. Okay, so this is something I’m not used to talking about (certainly not on video).

(…) Violet’s career is something she never planned on, though. She carved her path for herself purely by accident. (…read more, chris.pirillo.com)

For the past month, Christina Aguilera has been slowly trickling out artwork and teaser hints about her next album, Bionic. In the few images we’ve seen, she’s in some serious fetish gear; one image has her in a black latex vintage-style girdle. Which, by the way, is certainly custom-made because it isn’t easy to find a full, vintage-style latex girdle with garters like hers, believe it or not. I’ve looked. But it’s the promo photo above that intrigued me, and the most recent press that accompanies it. In an interview this week, Aguilera told paps she’s been reading erotica in the bathtub — of course I was hoping for some familiar titles — and goes on to say that the books are waterproof. That narrows down Christina’s self-titillating reading selections to only two books: Aqua Erotica: 18 Stories for a Steamy Bath and Wet: More Aqua Erotica (out of print). Aqua Erotica is like a million years old, so it seems an odd choice. Cleis Press should send her some of my new titles; looking at her choice of top-shelf sex accessories I think she’d get a lot more mileage out of Girls On Top, even if it’s plain old paper (until Amazon releases a waterproof Kindle, that is). Because in the photo above, she’s flashing a very sophisticated sex toy: in her hand is a $1,5000.00 silver handjob ring for men, the Betony Vernon Petting Ring. “It is a double ring that holds the index finger and thumb in the chi mudra position; the gesture used in meditation for a one-pointed mind and for a perfect hand job as well.”

Well okay, then. I’ll check out Christina’s new album.

Alikewise just launched a little over a week ago (so it’s pretty sparses right now), but it’s the first dating site to match people based on their favorite books. Okay, not the very first — Borders UK tried this back in mid-2009 with Happily Ever After — yet that was from a bookseller, rather than a dedicated dating site around books (and also sells books through Amazon). I think Alikewise is a spectacularly great idea. I mean, not only because I’m a writer, but because I’m a reader. And when you find someone who’s reading taste matches your own, it’s pure intellectual foreplay. Hot. I’m excited to see this site grow, and I’m eager to see what will happen with erotica and sex books. Two of my newest books in the database (YAY!) but with no matches yet (boo!), though the books are still quite new, like the dating site. My only wish for Alikewise — it’s in beta, so this may be on the way — would be a way for profiles to have threaded discussions about the books. This would be a great way of giving people ideas for conversation starters, in addition to public flirtation, etc. Sort of like blending Alikewise with Gravity. Nonetheless, big props to our new book based dating site. Finally!

Self-portrait by the amazing Katie West.

The transhumanists are at it again: over on h+ Magazine, they caught wind of the nerds + sex virus we’ve got over here at TinyNibbles and just posted The Geek’s Guide To Getting Girls: A Biology Nerd Studies Spring Break. Sadly it’s not really a guide, but it is a pretty entertaining read. I think I should probably write that guide, but that’s a topic for another post… Let me know what you think of this one, it’s got a *lot* of generalizing about male + female sexuality in it — here’s a snip:

(…) Great news. Two researchers at UCLA, Elizabeth Pillsworth and Martie Haselton, put the kibosh on feminine mystique. They published “Women’s Sexual Strategies: The Evolution of Long-Term Bonds and Extrapair Sex,” a study that tells us what women want, who they boink, when, and why, plus why they make seduction more complicated than if/then/else constructs in open source Fortran. We are the first generation of men to have scientific access to the unconscious motives of the human female. Science nerds are hereby empowered to get girlfriends. Ka-ching!

Pillsworth and Haselton assembled over 250 academic papers on such diverse topics as hunter-gatherer societies, bird and mammal behavior, and cruel psychological tricks on college students. They compared these against blood tests, sperm counts, immune responses, pheromone output, and vaginal fluid viscosity, then broke it all down to a few basic principles even an average Joe can understand. (That’d be me.) I headed to Spring Break in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, so I could observe these principles at work in the courtship behavior of drunken beach apes.(…read more, hplusmagazine.com)

I have a friend, a very kinky girl who happens to work at Kink.com (typically in The Upper Floor), who is going to be the first person I send this link to the minute I hit publish. That’s my way of saying that the hand painted resin figurines by LW Studio are not for everyone, and might certainly intrigue the kinkier readers — especially those who are manga/anime fans. The figures come with all the caveats of Japanese anime/manga viewing (read: not knowing the context makes certain scenarios confusing and possibly offensive), though fans of the genres will recognize series characters mixed in amongst the tentacles, cat girls and hyooge-breasted warrior babes. Not all are girls; do ogle the racing sportbikes and Formula 1 figurines. While LW Studio hasn’t updated their website in over a year, they are very active on their LW Studio eBay store, so if you’re the kind of reader to spend around $200 on a filthy collectible you can’t put on your coffee table, this post is also for you.

I’ve assembled a gallery after the jump because LW Studio’s website is glacial; while they excel at tiny girls in bondage, photo compression is not their forte. This “after the jump” comes with an explicit content warning. (via High On Sex, after seeing their great post on Figurine Art by Jessica Lichtenstein)

the Snuggie Kama Sutra — and yes, Snuggie porn

23 March 2010
Whenever I'm asked in interviews why people sexualize technology, I have a number of reasons on offer: tech is incorporated into our lifestyles, it gives us new ways to connect and communicate with others and that can be emotional or intimate, it offers privacy, allows us to explore our inhibitions, […]

seven real reasons to date a geek boy

20 March 2010
Image by the amazing Exey Panteleev. Women's magazines have a bad rap these days. They get ridiculed for being out of touch with today's woman, overusing sex to sell units, promising sexual tricks they can't possibly deliver, missing the mark by oversimplifying male sexuality, and trading on female insecurities to move […]

charming vintage clip from Polissons et Galipettes

19 March 2010
Titled 'nickelodeon porn' on PornHub, this is actually an excerpt from Polissons et Galipettes or Rascals and Somersaults, as seen in the vintage clip compilation "The Good Old Naughty Days" spanning 1905-1930. I love it: so much smiling and joy around erotic adventure. Many of the clips were made to […]

sacred meets profane: the erotic art of Saturno Butto

19 March 2010
The paintings of Saturno Butto are not for everyone; they are rife with dark erotic mysticism and heavy Catholic themes, and combine a world of wantonly obscene medical fetish with BDSM relationship scenarios -- things that alone would be intense, but together will surely strike a never, somewhere. Which, I […]
