Nibbles: Ethics of Tweeting Miscarriages, Girls of Nerdcore are Boring

* The upcoming Girls of Nerdcore 2010 looks seriously boring. And the topic is horror so it’s just a damn crying bleeding shame. Someone should cut Curtis Joe Walker, Modern Citizen, Addicted Image and Richard Kadrey loose on the idea. I’d slap down some long green for that.

* A Dallas judge made Texas bigots piss their homophobic pants yesterday when he struck down Texas’ ban on gay marriage. I want to be proud of California again. I really do. Dammit. Congrats, Texas — hope we can catch your bouquet.

* Few of us in the girls’ end of the SF tech scene will forget when a peripheral one of us Tweeted her miscarriage. Seriously. It’s not remembered fondly, and many still view the act with distaste. This week Carnal Nation poignantly asks, Is Tweeting Your MIscarriage TMI?

* Stop tweeting any and all articles about the bogus sex survey that claims women have sex because they’re bored or manipulative. It’s a survey of only 1006 women, godfuckingdammit, and that’s by no means a representative sample. It’s in a new book and mainstream media is crowing about it because it reinforces all the wrongheaded stereotypes about how we don’t have sex because WE LIKE IT. So stop spreading this harmful mythology, dear link re-posters. Question the source for a change and think for yourself. “What turns women on has long been an elusive question.” Really, Newsweek? Here’s what I wrote before this piece of shit news item resurfaced in a Twitter stream I soon dropped:

Someday I will live in a world where it’s just a given that my gender has sex because it gets us off. But, dammit, I was born before my time. FOX News tells us (with a minor dissenting voice from Fullbright) that a survey of 1006 women speaks for all women and the females, they have the sex for sport and to put one over on youse guys and stuff. Or some bullshit like that. I hate you FOX for perpetuating these assenine princess myths about sex. Fuck you. But your list is great to read on the toilet. “FOXSexpert: The Real Reason Women Have Sex” (foxnews.com)

I’ve kinda been dying to get in on the Nerdcore calendar for years.

Violet, I don’t disagree with you that the stories about the study are crap and the study itself doesn’t seem representative but its not because they “only” studied 1006 women. Most national polls for example have sample sizes of around 1000. The area in which the study sample seems to fail is that the sample group was University of Texas students and the women were predominately white. If you want to study the reasons for having sex for University of Texas women, this might be a good sample group. This sample though is not in the least bit representative of women in the US as a whole.

This of course totally ignores how the study was conducted, something I really can’t comment on.
