Morning nibbles

Check out the above image: The Elaisted One Credit Card. Elaisted writes, “Capitalism and art intersect here. Has anyone tried this? The Capital One credit card option when clicking on Prints and More above the image? Here’s the link. This is a Flickr sponsored deal, btw. They let you upload whatever image you want. I’m curious to see if any of my photos will make it through.” Now… A couple little lunchtime nibbles:

* Last night I got an email from Annie Sprinkle about the death of Gerard Damiano, director of Deep Throat. Then this morning I went on a rant about the end of porn’s old guard… Anyway, here’s Porn director of ‘Deep Throat’ Gerard Damiano dies (telegraph.co.uk) — Gerard Damiano, director of the 1970s hugely controversial and pioneering porn film Deep Throat, has died in Florida at the age of 80.

* Andrew Blake is going multi-lingual. Okay, make all the “cunning” jokes you want, but one of my favorite erotic filmmakers has apparently converted his Andrew Blake website into French, German, Italian and Spanish using a new translation tool from TranslationXXX. More languages will be added in the coming months. I really want to translate this site, at the very least, into Spanish…. Hmmm.

* I have a new addition in the sidebar — after careful review, I’ve decided I really like the playful amateur erotic British porn site Cinema Erotique. Give them a click and tell me what you think. I find them quite refreshing.

* Michigan has a statewide porn censorship law going into effect January 1 that requires retailers to conceal the lower two-thirds of sexually “explicit” publications or put them in a separate area to avoid exposure to underage store patrons. The law pertains to book covers, magazines, video boxes, sex manuals, romance novels, and more mainstream men’s and women’s magazines. So, does that mean my next book Best Women’s Erotica 2009 (ooh, Kindle too!) will have to be hidden from the public at Barnes and Noble? That’s *really* going to hurt my indie women-run publisher…

  1. the Michigan law is certainly an overreaction.. but I do have to say, I was amazed on a recent trip to Michigan at just how visible the porn was at gas stations. Hustler and Club International were in magazine racks just 2-3 feet off the ground, right at kiddie eye level. In California I never see porn in gas stations, but I’d expect it to be on the top shelf if it were displayed. (I assume it’s behind the counter… I’ve never tried to buy porn at a gas station, what with the internet, and with lots of porn stores near where I work anyway)

A simple top shelf restriction would have been sufficient, and I don’t see why they’d go after anything tamer than Playboy. I would imagine (or at least hope) that the courts narrow the scope of the law.

  2. i’m gonna give it a go. I wonder how explicit of an image could be put on the card? I’ll have to borrow a camera an make my own pics so the are absolutely no copyright infringement.

  3. Sorry for the long comment.

I tried this with my bank. I used classic Pin-ups. About 3 years ago, they printed it. Just recently, I tried it again with a new image (because mine was faded and no longer ‘swiped’), and they rejected it due to “possible copyright infringement”. I even tried to put my own art on my card and they still rejected it. I suspect Capitol One will do the same thing. It’s awesome they offer the service, but a shame they censor it.
