Indeed, it's a case of theft, because even though she sent a check to cover the cost of it, the library still doesn't have the book. And has to go to all the trouble to re-aquire a copy and re-inventory it. And she has announced that she's perfectly willing to do it again, and again and again until the library no longer keeps a copy.

As the librarian said in an interview, if she stole from a store, she'd be prosecuted for shoplifting. Why is it that stealing from a library is somehow a 'lesser' crime?

In my opinion, it should be a felony to steal books from a library.

@Nightbird Well, she didn't misplace it. She took it with the express purpose of denying it to other people. And she even announced that intention to the library. That's theft, and trying to throw money at it doesn't make it OK.

It seems to me that this should be a civil matter. If she's willing to pay for the books, why bring in the police? Every person who misplaces a library book should be arrested?

OTOH, her civil disobedience is bringing a lot of attention to the book, which I think would be backfiring on her.

that's crazy. the BIBLE has some pretty bad stuff it in (and I mean rated R stuff)

a book I read growing up was the gUrl.com's Deal With It. It came out around the time I was finishing puberty and really gave me a positive spin on things like "it's okay to masturbate or be gay or whatever"

So who put her in charge of enforcing the local obscenity laws, anyway? She seems a bit eager to get on the case...

And yet in the end, she's driven mad by her own personal necronomicon of sex.
