It's funny. In most of the places I've been, the "alternative" papers have been pretty liberal, fairly gonzo, and generally rather amusing - in other words, usually the opposite of the local mainstream. It figures that an alternative paper in SF would be uber-conservative.

I also have to say that I envy your rather liberal and progressive government. The people around here still get their chastity belts in a knot if they think anyone is having fun. Cries of "abomination!" and the like are sadly common where I currently am.

Oh my, that SFWeekly article is ludicrous. What exactly is his point? That we shouldn't mention sex work? Or that having better-than-average sex workers is somehow a bad thing?

I haven't read the Weekly in years, and I think I'll keep not reading it.

wow, great comments. David, thank you for speaking up with your support! there are a lot of self-identified republicans and conservatives that read, listen to and enjoy many facets of my work and turn the stereotype of the intolerant, no-sex republican (and christian) on its head. they write me all the time and tell me! so to me, it's really important to be reminded that people like Wachs actually *don't* speak for all right-leaning people. they just think they do, which is annoying.

The SF Weekly just plain sucks. Their "writers" all seem to enjoy hating San Francisco, running with the most cariactured bullshit portrayals of SF to please Mike Lacey and the republicans in charge at the home office in Phoenix.

Their cover stories lately have been the personal axe grindings of Mary Spicuzza (who literally did a whole cover story on "successful women who date losers" and another on Wikipedia because someone on Wikipedia deleted her sister's entry), and one does not learn much about um, local news.

I'm kinda glad the Guardian sued them and kicked their asses. Maybe it'll mean sending some of these people back to their hometowns where they go to the Olive Garden and not be traumatized by something that Isn't Mainstream.
