sex.com — a url worth dying for?

December 13, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

In a twist worthy of a James Ellroy novel, con man Stephen Cohen — who forged a letter convincing Network Solutions to give him possession of the URL sex.com (via VeriSign) and whose whereabouts are still unknown — can now add “gangland murder attempt” to the new chapter in his real-life, sex.com neo-noir crime drama. When the URL’s owner, Gary Kremen, had the courts order Cohen to return Sex.com and pay him $65 million in damages, Cohen fled to Mexico — after he’d had the URL for three years, allegedly making $500,000 a month selling banner ads to other online porn sites. Come to think of it, the whole story (now 11 years in the making) could only be written by Carl Hiassen to have a fitting and sensible end — especially when you throw in a history that includes a convicted felon, a private investigator with a Stanford MBA, a Match.com startup dot-commer (now former) tweaker, a daughter caught smuggling 202 pounds of marijuana, a bizarre bid to buy Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, and the operator of a Mexican shrimp farm. Don’t forget the Tijuana assassination attempt.

Now, Cohen is on the lam again and his lawyer in Mexico was attacked in a old-school Mafia-style whack attempt last week, injuring the lawyer’s cab driver and a young boy. Think Cohen will show up for his San Jose court date next February? Yeah, sure. Snip from Red Herring:

“The shooting came one day after Stephen Cohen, the man who fast-talked his way into control of sex.com in 1995, was ordered released from jail so he could round up $65 million he owes Gary Kremen, the programmer turned Internet entrepreneur who sued to recover control of the domain name he registered in 1994.

The lawyer who was attacked, Gustavo Cortés Carvajal, is believed to be the only person with access to some of Mr. Cohen’s assets in Mexico, including a Tijuana property the two men jointly own.

He was unhurt after gunmen in Tijuana fired numerous rounds at the vehicle in which he was traveling, but the driver and a four-year-old boy were injured in the attack.

Mr. Cohen’s whereabouts remain unknown and he has not been tied to the shooting, but Mr. Kremen on Monday would not rule out that possibility.” Link. (via Valleywag; also, more background here)

comstock films: ‘matt and khym’ about to ship, preview now online

December 13, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

MK-gallery04.jpg

My friend Tony Comstock has been at it again — filming sexy, deeply-in-love couples with high-quality documentary techniques and giving mainstream porn a good spanking in the process. For instance, “Matt and Khym’s love scene is shot entirely on film and presented in 16:9 anamophic format with Dolby sound — ideal for playback on both standard televisions and wide-screen home theater systems.” It’s no wonder I can now call him an award-winning filmmaker — and what’s great is that the ‘award-winning’ title isn’t from some nepotistic, empty-gesture, laundry-list-of-the-usual-suspects of an AVN award. Those many sets of laurel leaves are not from the “porn awards” — AVN seldom gives awards out to non-porn valley filmmakers or people making porn outside the old boys’ distribution network they cater to, so I don’t take their awards very seriously anyway. No — Comstock Films wins awards for their porn films from international film festivals. And, why not?

Definitely take a minute to check out the explicit preview that just went up of his next film Matt and Khym: Better Than Ever. My pal Thomas Roche has a great review of it on Eros Zine, snip:

“(…) Their conversation is disarming and, in that sense, seductive, and what’s more — and possibly more important, in this context — watching them fuck is plenty hot.

There’s a deceptive intimacy generated by any media production — it’s the same sort of connection one feels with the characters in any successful work of art, which is why so many of us fantasize sexually about Jennifer Anniston or Russell Crowe or Jenna Jameson. With Matt & Khym, as with Comstock’s other films, that intimacy is profoundly different from your average erotic flick. Watching it, like making it, is a revolutionary act, because the film doesn’t set out to create a fantasy; it’s the eroticism of everyday life that Matt & Khym is after, and it gets hold of it with wet, hot, cuddly abandon, and never lets go.” Link.

us army using adbrite for recruitment

December 12, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

… and they’re willing to pay $1000 a day to be on your blog. I just found the US Army’s ads in my AdBrite queue for rejection or approval, along with “meet hot singles” and “win at poker”. The final frontier of the desperate spammer. So far, AdBrite pretty much sucks, mostly due to the user interface — I could make it profitable if it was more customizable, so I’ll probably dump it and sell ads myself.

The screencaps I just took are after the jump.

roboexotica: the results

GETV action image by Jacob Appelbaum

I have indeed returned from the land of Red Bull — did you know that Austria is where it comes from? For me, this was a discovery. For the Austrians, it is just another thing to mix with booze. No wonder there were like a zillion Red Bull mixed drinks in every bar I went to.

319385277_7e7eebba1e_o.jpgI know, you’re thinking, hey, you were at a cocktail robotics festival and you still had to go to bars? Um, well… the funny thing was, at Roboexotica it was really, really hard to get a drink. It was continually crowded, and except for opening and closing night, the machines seldom ran continually or all at once — except the External Combustion Engine, which was a consistent jet-fuel cocktail, hangover delivery device. It cranked out the shots nonstop — and it really looked like gasoline in the clear little thimble cups. Still, the Roboexotica bar service was painfully slow — they took their mixing slow and serious, so at one point I actually left to get a beer. Of course, it’s Vienna, where they love to drink and you can order a beer and walk out of any cafe for a stroll, no problem. And on the last night, thanks to the Slovenians, I drank Absinthe for the first time.

Roboexotica was a fantastic festival, both for the experience of a novel arts fest and for the playful application of ideas to function. I say that because in reading the Reuters writeup from their opening night visit, it’s clear that they didn’t really get Roboexotica. The ladies from Reuters, like most of the other journalists, seemed to be asking the question ‘why cocktail robots’ (this always got a snarky answer*). When the more interesting and revealing question was, ‘how — cocktail robotics’. Roboexotica takes a concept — the social nature of cocktail culture — and asks artists to reimagine the experience with technology, and apply it to create an experience of human-machine interaction. The results are an astounding mix of technology and creativity — and function. Few machines had buttons to press. Of the drink exhibits, The External Combustion Engine took RFID technology and repurposed it as drink-coasters which told the machine what kind of drink to mix into the cup they were placed under. The WERP-bot used facial recognition software to find your face and target your mouth, then after a vocal command, launched a cigarette (hopefully) into your gaping maw. Two machines by Daniel Fabry and Anika Kronberger were amazing — one used Theremin technology to play back scenes from movies (like The Shining) on a screen, responding to the movement of clinking your glass so you could ‘toast’ the people onscreen; another screen had an upended bottle that ‘drained’ into your waiting glass when you put your glass under the bottle’s mouth (under the monitor, and it would dispense a Campari).

It was outstanding, and exciting. If you get a chance, watch Eddie’s hilarious and excellent short video clips of different machines being demonstrated (and our Roboexotica 2006 GETV episode). My liver is drying out. And I’m extremely happy to say that I know a couple of the Roboexotica 2006 award winners — and this was their first entry into a festival with a kinetic piece, and I can now chide them with the title ‘award-winning international kinetic artists’. So awesome!

* Snarky, that’s what I’d call the response. I made an in-joke reference to it in a previous post — the response was Jonathan Moore’s, “Because robots are brilliant! And alcohol is brilliant! So they must be even more brilliant together!” The in-joke on this was that it’s actually an SRL reference, out of the mouth of Dan Collard, who once (during our San Jose show load-in) explained his unique, snarky British take on the relationship between beer and motorcycles. It’s, uh, brilliant!

oh luggage and phone, how I miss you

December 12, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

This is day three without my big suitcase and everything in it, including my phone — so if you’re trying to call me, you should really send me an email instead. My Blackberry was in my case… as are socks, undies, my flatiron, all my makeup, my ruffle-but beaded panties, boots, jackets, my bunny slippers, assorted clothes, and Jonathan and David’s Roboexotica 2006 award. I do love Virgin Airlines, but this is putting a strain on our new relationship.

But the great news in all this — upon hearing of my current phoneless state, Helio is overnighting me a white Drift! I’m so excited, especially to play with their new Metblogs integration. I was getting tired of my Blackberry and wishing I had a cameraphone anyway; I’ll see about hooking it up with my Flickr and Blip accounts for extra fun — especially with the upcoming porn and sex toy company holiday parties I’ve been invited to in the coming weeks…!

mccain’s new law would extend obscenity laws to blogs

December 12, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

Also to mailing lists, message boards, chatrooms, social networking sites, hosting services, domain name registration services, search services and video hosting services. What an ignorant douche. Snip from Slashdot:

“Senator John McCain has proposed a bill to extend federal obscenity reporting guidelines to all forms of internet communications. Those who fail to report according to guidelines could face fines of up to $300,000 for unreported posts to a blog or mailing list. The EFF was quick to slam the proposal, saying that this was the very definition of ’slippery slope’, and citing the idea of ‘personal common carrier’.” Link.

new retro raunch e-cards

December 12, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

Two weeks ago I blogged the free neekid girlie holiday e-cards available from Hegre right now — but if you love the pinups, fifties’ fetish, squishy delicious natural bodies and a touch of playful fetish (and can totally live without the Santa hats on your babes), check out the newest line of Retro Raunch e-cards. Naughty or nice, it’s all relative — some people you know might deserve an underfed eastern European blonde doing fake lesbian tongue kisses (hey, don’t blame me, I just like it when their boobies touch), while others deserve something a bit more Bettie Page.

geeky new adult social networking site

December 12, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

My inbox is a constant erotic treasure-trove; were it a plate of cupcakes I’d be sitting in it right now… I just got an email from the people who made Playful Bent, an extremely interesting, 2.0 buzzword-compliant, adult social networking site that has a lot of smarty-pants features for us UI (user interface) nerds. Hookups and thoughtful tech? Oh, fetishes, how I love it when you’re together.

The people from Playful Bent write me saying,

“- It’s kink and pansexual friendly. It’s been created by bisexual and polyamorous folk, and tries to make no assumptions about sexuality and gender.

- Unlike a lot of adult sites on the net, It’s actually up to date web technology. Written in Ruby on Rails, loaded with ajax, and other UI niceness.

- It’s an attempt to be creative with *software*, rather than with *content*. We think that we’re promoting interesting and unique (and hopefully kinky and flirtatious) interactions between our users.”

I was skeptical about their site until I checked out their really fun looking striptease feature, where each time you look at more of another person’s photo set, it enables them to see more of yours — and I found a striptease or two I’d love to see, including this sexy blonde working on her motorcycle… Looks like it’s still in some sort of beta with ‘coming soon’ features, but it already has a space for exquisite-corpse style erotic story making… Nice.

the taugshow

December 11, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

Monochrom invited me to Vienna last week to participate in/cover Roboexotica and to be a special guest on their Austrian TV show, the Taugshow — and I had a great time! Yaaaaay! The Taugshow was entirely in English, and was so funny my face actually hurt from smiling and laughing by the time I got onstage. While I was on, talking about SRL, the ethics of cybersex and rape, and having my books attacked by Focus on the Family, Jonathan Moore shot two videos of me from the audience; they are embedded after the jump, or you can watch video 1 here and video 2 here.

Taugshow photos are in this Flickr tag.

The next day, Johannes took a big group of us out into the Austrian countryside to see what he called the “porn castle”. This is where many porn videos have been shot — I actually recognized it on the outside at the locations for Rocco Siffredi’s Marquis de Sade and another bad, dubbed Euro porn film I reviewed for Good Vibes once. I shot two videos; in one I’m outside the castle watching my friends scale the moat; in another I’m getting deep and thoughtful about the rate of consumable information on the web. You can watch these video 1 here and video 2 here, or in the embeds after the jump.

My castle photos are in this Flickr tag. Main post photo by Jacob Appelbaum.

GETV Roboexotica episode

getvrobo.jpg

I’m blogging this from my own bed, yay! I’m home safe and sound (except minus one major piece of luggage, so if you’re trying to call me I think my phone is still at Heathrow). I am absolutely beat and have lots to blog, but wanted to call your attention to the first GETV “live at” Roboexotica episode, where I interview cocktail-bot makers, get demonstrations, drink the cocktails, and even try a machine on my own. Much fun!

Watch Roboexotica 2006 in Vienna.

More tomorrow, including the Roboexotica 2006 award winners; also, don’t miss my Chronicle column, a very hip, sex-tech and erotica focused Sexy Holiday Shopping Guide — it includes some of my favorite new sex toys of 2006.

london tornado

December 09, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

It’s the last night of Roboexotica — I was on the Taugshow; Eddie and I shot a bunch of cocktail-heavy interviews for GETV and I’ll have a wrap up with award winners when I get home (tonight I had a lot of Absinthe, just packed, and I get on a plane in three hours). But it’s odd: I met a woman tonight who flew from London to see the festival but had been delayed due to a tornado — a tornado — hitting London on thursday. It’s had us all talking about global warming tonight. (Jake: “Hey you know what’s great about global warming?” Me: “No, what?” Jake: “I have no fucking idea!”)

Anyway, check out the story and photos, because it’s just weird. I’ve got fun photos and videos of my visit to Austria’s “porn castle” this afternoon and much more to share with you soon…

OSS is competing against a variety of others, including the Slate Magazine Daily Podcast, This American Life and (ahem) Search the Scriptures Daily.

So if you think my podcast — indy, not-for-profit, sex-positive, grrrl powered — deserves to win, please vote for Open Source Sex! Yay!

roboexotica :: day four (and vienna)

December 08, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

Update: Roboexotica’s sever is down from all the traffic! I’ll re-update when it’s back up… now up and running nicely!

Update: Watch Eddie’s awesome videos of five cocktail robots in action in this post, Roboexotica 2006: Extras.

Dig the Roboexotica coverage — it’s great:

* Wired has a great piece I, Robot Bartender. Lots of great quotes from the San Francisco contingent, including Simone Davalos and Jonathan Moore.
* Forbes has Motor Oil and Martinis, where they tell you, “After you finish reading this paragraph, open up another browser window, go to the travel site of your choice, and book an immediate flight to Vienna, Austria. Head for the airport without delay.”
* PC Magazine has Suave Robots Mix Cocktails in Vienna (their info via Reuters)
* ABC is asking us for photos, I have to send some along after this post.

We are the media:
* Dig my alcoholocaust post. I have video of dancing corkscrews, the icepick murderer chair tests and Moore’s External Combustion Engine.
* My ongoing Roboexotica Flickr album, Eddie Codel’s Roboexotica Flickr photos, and Jake Appelbaum is the event photographer — and has tons of great images: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3.
* The arts organization behind that is friends with Monochrom and Roboexotica, Shifz has ongoing bloggage

My sightseeing album! And a surreal video moment out sightseeing with Jonathan Moore yesterday…

I have to go be on TV in like an hour to talk about sex and tech. Yikes!

It’s just after lunchtime and I’m sitting in the Roboexotica exhibition space on a lovely green vintage couch, actually literally in an installation that evokes modern retro cocktail culture. This is the definitive flavor of Roboexotica; it’s the kind of festival that blends European socializing where nothing is rushed and the distinctive culture fetish that many hip young Euro artists have for Americana — but most of all, these are definitely the people whose conceptualizing of robots is strongly influenced by The Jetsons and Tiki cocktail culture sensibilities.

roboexotica, day one

December 05, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

Today is the opening day for Roboexotica, the international festival for cocktail robotics. As many of you know, I’m here in Vienna, Austria as a guest of the festival. I just woke up and the sun just went down — am I ready for a cocktail? Ummm, not quite yet, but I’m wandering around the machines and robots and panicked builders shooting video and taking pictures. It’s exciting and cool; there are robots here from all over that doo all kinds of things, from launching cocktail garnishes to stabbing ice to, well, mixing your drinks for you. There are about two dozen students here from the art college in Graz (Austria) with all of their projects as well, from machines to multimedia installations, and the event is located in the Museumquartier, which has been my compound for the past few days. It’s amazing to be part of a show in the heart of art museums in Vienna and I can’t get enough of walking out the door to see the museum of modern art, etc.

Vienna is absolutely gorgeous and wonderful. The architecture is a Nouveau wet dream, the people friendly and sweet even though I speak like three words of German, there is coffee with soymilk a plenty, the food is great and the whole city center is teeming with xmas/holiday decor and stands selling hot mulled wine and roasted chestnuts and crafty stuff. Last night Johannes took a bunch of us San Franciscans out to a traditional Viennese dinner, where the staff all wore the classic outfits and the food was, well, from Vienna. I avoided things made of blood. After, Vale and Johannes and Marion went to sleep, Simone and David went back to work on robots, and Jonathan and I went to an underground jazz club full of Dieter-like Austrians smoking and drinking and being very serious about the bad free-form jazz. Awesome!

Watch the video I just shot of the cocktail robots here or embedded after the jump. More soon!

weird — I’m near the top of the “war on blogs” hitlist?

December 04, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

I came across this yesterday, posted by Wil Wheaton:

Wikipedia Trolls try to get entries on bloggers deleted

A well-known group of childish trolls is at it again, this time launching a coordinated effort to delete pages for several popular and well-known bloggers on Wikipedia. Their first (and current) target is Tony Pierce, and they say they’re going after the Freeway Blogger and Violet Blue next.”

Read more in this post on Metblogs LA by David Markland. They mention me at the bottom as being next on the hitlist in this so-called “war on blogs”. Yikes.

It’s like 6am here in Vienna and I can’t sleep. I can hear Eddie with the same jetlag issue in the next room over, across the hall…

Update: Just found this post Wikipedia Trolls try to get entries on bloggers deleted with my name in it on Digg as well, with lotsa comments.

great snips

December 04, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

I just edited the cocktail robot descriptions for the exhibitions (they get my editing talents in exchange for… drinks). These are great excerpts:

“A ballet of 15, 30, 150, 1000, corkscrews, dancing, generating their own sound, computer-operated, animated!”

“Three different long drinks (plus ice) are prepared by CockBot I in the comfortable atmosphere of the /Swing/, therefore thoughts about rationalisation and efficiency are easily forgotten. A robot which has proven its worth a good many times especially on late evenings.”

“In five steps, limes get squeezed, sugar and alcohol are portioned, the ingredients mixed and the perfect amount of ice is added — and everything is controlled by micro-processing units. A compressor and a pneumatic cylinder make sure that Robomoji has enough power to persevere through those longer cocktail evenings, providing it with everlasting powers envied by many barkeepers.”

“Technological progress in the field of ice production has caused the ice pestle to diminish into the obscurity of urban myths, horror movies of varying quality, and retro-sentimentality. Despairingly, he rears up once more to take revenge on the well-formed ice cube.”

And, David and Jonathan’s really cool robot:

“A very simple drink delivery system, controlled by RFID tags and which operates using pressurized liquids passed through fuel injectors to provide humans with liquid ‘fuel’. When an RFID tag is placed down on the controller, the machine reads the tag to identify which drink to make and creates the drink associated with the particular tag by emitting bursts of liquid from the fuel injectors.”

Jake is now awake, and I am *living* *in* *livejournal*. I will document.

… And I’m about to pass out. My Vienna photoset is here, will grow every chance I get to upload. Jake Appelbaum crashed hard in the room across from mine earlier and wouldn’t wake up; we’re all jetlag victims. Jonathan Moore pretty much just lost consciousness on my bed fully clothed, face down while I blog this. I think I can handle it…. ;)

snakes okay, robots not

December 03, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

I’m sitting in Heathrow right now waiting to connect to my Vienna flight, and had to stop and share the fact that one of my in-flight movies was Snakes on a Plane! And, no robots allowed. Which is a concern actually, because I’m traveling with a robot for the exhibition, The External Combustion Machine, made by David Fine and Jonathan Moore. Keep your fingers crossed the bot didn’t get tossed in a stack of toothpaste tubes, confiscated water and nail clippers….

Why does waiting for a shuttle make me blog nervously?

gay porn murder case: a nightmare of homophobia

December 02, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

I’ve been watching the Google News headlines evolve over the past week about the gay porn star who murdered a wealthy Denver ‘benefactor’ in cold blood, but what I’m reading about the “Playgirl killer” murder case at Gay Porn Blog is equally chilling and fascinating. I knew, like many, that “Marcus Allen” was gay-for-pay, but I had no idea how deeply and dangerously his pathos and hatred of homosexuality went — and it brings up a lot of questions about homophobia, how it’s expressed and the whole gay-for-pay thing. Snip from my friends at Gay Porn Blog:

“Although he was a fairly well-known porn star (he starred in over a dozen movies over the past few years, and was named ‘Freshman of the Year’ by Freshman Magazine in 2003), he was a gun-collecting, homophobic straight man when away from the gay porn spotlight. Denver Post reports:

… Boham told Lara Holland, who lived in a Denver mansion on High Street in an apartment a floor below Boham, that he ’sanitized’ his apartment by thoroughly scrubbing it because a gay man had lived there previously, she said.

‘He hated (gays),’ she said. ‘He hated their lifestyle.’”

Check out the post Marcus Allen, Murder Suspect and Playgirl Killer Apprehended, Hates Gays for more bizarre information on this whole thing, and also check out the Playgirl pics and many porn pics of Allen getitng his dick sucked, etc. (in those posts). I’ve often wondered what goes on in the mind of a gay-for-pay porn performer, and now I think it’s a pretty dark place — an ever-evolving, pathological combination of James Ellroy-esque masculinity and a culture that reinforces and encourages dishonesty about male sexuality. Makes me hate Playgirl even more for their internalized/projected homophobia, making gay porn stars use fake (or sometimes even their real-life) names to pose in their mag — Playgirl’s practice of this is common knowledge in and out of the porn industry. As if straight girls care if the hunk they jack off to is gay or not… but then again, when was the last time any of us jacked off to the eversofts in Playgirl? Anyway, it’s this kind of inherent dishonesty, I think, that allows murderous homophobia to evolve into an unchecked monster.

waking vixen’s ‘the bi apple’ trailer

December 02, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

I’m so excited to see The Bi Apple trailer arrive! My pal Dacia (aka Waking Vixen, fellow Fleshbot minion) has been working on writing, directing, casting and making a bisexual film that reflects her New York values (hee! kinda like our SF values!) with some big-studio backing, and she’s just released a juicy preview. I’ve embedded it after the jump, plus with another tasty, exclusive still of Dacia and Simone that I convinced her to email me this evening. I was all like, pleeeeze, pleeeze… Along with these, you can see even more in the early Fleshbot post — check ‘em out, as the film includes hotties such as sexblog pals Tasty Trixie and Tucker and the incredibly hot (and beautifully named) leading lady Simone Valentino.

Watch the trailer and get excited about porn again, not all depressed like after Porn of the Dead. I’m done packing, and about to crash hard before a long flight… Get ready for Tiny Nibbles in Vienna!

Last night, late, on the phone in my bed, I convinced a boy to take pictures of his workbench for me and post them so I could see his hard, throbbing, deliciously cluttered workbench. I think I confuse the boys sometimes, but they oblige. And then this morning I’m cruising blogs and not only do I see that my pal qDot is back from Siberia, or the Second Life furrie hibernation den, or the 30-day spiritual journey he spent wandering the desert of Fry’s electronics — but he posted a glorious photo of his workbench, complete with descriptive note orgry so we can see the lab conditions in which he frankenstiens a SeXBox USB and harnesses its power like some teledildonic doomsday device.

porn of the dead

December 01, 2006 By: violet Category: Uncategorized Comments Off

potd.jpgPorn of the Dead… looks bad. Really bad. As in, not-good bad. Just the undead, frozen-in-lifeless-horror boob job in the last frame of the trailer is enough to torment a girl post mortem.

I just had to point it out, because it’s zombies, and December, and what’s christmas without zombie porn? (thanks, zombie mobster)

On the other cold, lifeless hand, you could look at some sexy alt fetish models on the non-zombie, blood-free and totally live nude girl populated misnomer site Dead Babes. Their boobs won’t eat your brains.
